About The Position

Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, the state-certified Law Enforcement Officer enforces the laws of the State of South Carolina, municipal codes as applicable, and federal laws as they apply for properties of the Greenville Health Authority. This role performs all duties of a police officer, applying problem-solving techniques in support of the Department's community policing philosophy to protect life and property. The officer responds to calls for service, reports findings, and takes appropriate action to resolve issues. Key responsibilities include patrolling assigned areas, assisting with crime scene security and processing, conducting follow-up investigations, and employing crime reduction/prevention techniques. The officer also supports the prosecution of criminal cases, acts as a liaison between the Police Department and the campus community, and builds rapport with staff, patients, and visitors. Additional duties involve making court appearances, serving warrants/subpoenas, placing items into property and evidence, investigating auto accidents, and directing pedestrian and vehicular traffic as needed. The position is PRN (Pro Re Nata) with variable shifts. The Greenville Health Authority Police Department does not participate in the South Carolina Police Officer Retirement System (SC PORS); instead, GHA Police Officers are offered a matching 457B plan as a retirement saving plan.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent OR post-high school diploma/highest degree earned.
  • Two (2) years of experience.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • An acceptable motor vehicle record, as defined by the Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Chart.
  • Proof of auto insurance.
  • South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Class I Law Enforcement Officer Certification or formerly held a Law Enforcement Officer Certification from another state (with a break in service no more than three (3) years).
  • Basic computer skills including word processing.
  • Mathematical skills.

Nice To Haves

  • College level coursework in criminal justice preferred.
  • Certification through International Association of Hospital Security and Safety preferred (must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment).

Responsibilities

  • Enforce the laws of the State of South Carolina, municipal codes, and federal laws on properties of the Greenville Health Authority.

  • Maintain a highly visible presence while on patrol as both a deterrent to criminal activity and an outreach to the general public.
  • Conduct foot patrol of assigned areas, building positive community relations and providing a visual deterrent to criminal activity.
  • Enforce all applicable laws as necessary in providing for the protection and security of the public and property of Prisma Health - Upstate.
  • Investigate complaints and criminal activity, interviewing available witnesses, victims, and other participants.
  • Collect physical and photographic evidence.
  • Assist victims in the reporting process.
  • Keep updated on recent criminal activity reported on (i.e. shift pass on, other shifts).
  • Complete all reports and supplemental documentation accurately and in a timely manner, ensuring they are free of grammatical errors and clearly written.
  • Respond to and investigate collisions as required.
  • Perform traffic control and direction duties as needed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Actively perform enforcement of all state laws for traffic violations as appropriate.
  • Self-initiate field activity and take appropriate enforcement action.
  • Respond to citizen traffic complaints.
  • Participate in traffic enforcement activities.
  • Ensure communication with the public is clear, professional, and concise.
  • Utilize proper radio etiquette and communicate clearly and effectively with dispatch and fellow officers.
  • Maintain communication with supervisors when necessary and seek assistance when needed.
  • Promptly return contact to all messages and regularly check communication from court offices.
  • Operate department vehicles in a safe manner at all times and with due regard to duties imposed by law.
  • Maintain duty gear and other issued equipment in a safe and serviceable manner at all times and have necessary equipment when reporting for duty.
  • Maintain sound officer safety practices in dealing with suspicious persons and handling suspects/prisoners.
  • Report unsafe conditions when observed.
  • Assist with crime scene security and processing.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations.
  • Investigate crimes and employ crime reduction/prevention techniques situationally.
  • Support prosecution of criminal cases.
  • Act as liaison between the Police Department and the campus community.
  • Build rapport with staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Make court appearances.
  • Serve warrants/subpoenas.
  • Place items into property and evidence.
  • Investigate auto accidents.
  • Direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic as needed.
