About The Position

UPMC is seeking a dedicated and safety-conscious law enforcement professional for a Part-Time Sr. Police Officer II position at UPMC Carlisle Hospital. This role is ideal for individuals at any stage of their law enforcement career, including those retired or seeking a change. UPMC offers a $5,000 sign-on bonus for a two-year commitment, career advancement opportunities with a police officer career step after 18 months, and a shift differential of $1.75 per hour for non-traditional shifts. Employees accrue Paid Time Off annually.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) basic training program (Act 120) or equivalent (PA State Police Academy training, out of state Police Academy), OR Police Officer training as mandated by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, OR Federal Agent (to include but not limited to FBI, DEA, Secret Service, U.S. Marshal, Veteran’s Administration) OR Military Police Training, OR Five years of prior law enforcement experience (to include Sheriff, Deputy Sheriff, Probation/Parole Officer, Liquor Enforcement Officer, Fish/Game Commission and/or Park police officer) wherein a firearm was an essential tool and at a minimum, annual firearm training and qualification was maintained.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to effectively interact, communicate, and diffuse potential combative situations.
  • Psychological fitness to deal with stress and potentially dangerous conflict situations.
  • Physical fitness to deal with typical physical demands requiring full body motion, physical strength, and stamina for crisis interventions and medical emergencies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written format.
  • Good interpersonal skills; able to deal with stress and potentially dangerous conflict situations.
  • Subject to a thorough background and criminal record check.
  • Must be available for all shifts.
  • Required to wear a bullet proof vest.
  • Must be able to perform as a security officer when necessary.
  • Act 235 with Firearms - Act 235 with successful completion of both the academic and firearms training modules required prior to hire.
  • Must meet audio and visual standards outlined in Act 235 at time of hire.
  • Successfully complete UPMC Police Training upon hire.
  • Successful completion of all UPMC mandated weapons and firearms training.
  • Successfully pass UPMC Physical Fitness Standard.
  • Must have good hand/eye coordination and able to pass an eye and hearing test with appropriate correction.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform activities within a medium physical demand category as per U.S. Department of Labor guidelines.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Basic Life Support Instructor (BLSI) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Driver's License.
  • Act 235 with Firearms with renewal.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal.
  • Act 33 with renewal.
  • Act 34 with renewal.
  • Act 501.
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, staff, and UPMC properties.
  • Enforce UPMC rules and regulations.
  • Patrol UPMC hospitals, buildings, grounds, and associated areas to deter criminal activity.
  • Investigate criminal events and document activities.
  • Take appropriate police action when necessary.
  • Monitor security, fire, and environmental alarms.
  • Respond to and resolve problems, disputes, and unusual circumstances.
  • Provide customer service to patients, families, visitors, and staff.
  • Serve as a first responder to violent acts.
  • Be armed with a firearm.
  • Oversee operations of assigned shift and lead daily operations of the department.
  • Organize and assign work, and provide daily instruction to staff.
  • Handle evidence control pertaining to UPMC initiated criminal investigations.
  • Respond to acts of extreme violence with potential for deadly force deployment.
  • Support various types of investigations with system-wide implications.
  • Carry, properly handle, and deploy a firearm.
  • Issue PA state citations using law enforcement applications.
  • Investigate incidents of unusual circumstances.
  • Perform as a Security Officer when necessary.
  • Escalate problems and concerns to Management.
  • Transport individuals subjected to criminal arrest and prosecution.
  • Serve legal documents such as arrest warrants, subpoenas, and Protection From Abuse orders.
  • Function as a shift supervisor as needed.
  • Provide support at various UPMC facilities, requiring knowledge of physical layouts, site-specific policies, and interaction with different management and customer bases.
