About The Position

The Police Officer Trainee is an entry-level, non-sworn position in the City of Stockton Police Department. Trainees are assigned to the Basic Peace Officer Academy and must satisfactorily complete its requirements leading to a Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certificate before becoming candidates for the sworn Police Officer position. The role emphasizes community-based policing, familiarity between law enforcement and community residents, and collaborative problem solving. Assignment to this classification is temporary; failure to complete a police academy will result in termination from City employment. The position requires the ability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, and to drive. Public safety employees must reasonably respond to emergencies at all times and maintain a primary residence within 45 minutes of City Hall. New employees have up to three months from hire to meet this residency requirement and must comply throughout employment. City employees are disaster service workers and may be required to report for or remain on duty for disaster response activities, as well as undertake an applicable loyalty oath. New-employee incentives include a $15,000 sign-on bonus, relocation assistance reimbursement, and 40 hours of vacation available for immediate use. The City also pays the entire employee share of the health plan contribution.
