About The Position

This is a part-time position for Police Officer Trainees who will be paid an hourly wage while attending a Utah Post Academy Police Officer Standards and Training program. This program includes classroom lectures, written testing, practical assessments, physical fitness testing, and scenario-based training to obtain Utah Police Officer Certification. Upon successful completion of POST and promotion to Full Time Police Officer I, the role involves performing a variety of highly trained law enforcement procedures for the City of St. George to protect and maintain the well-being of the general population. Applicants hired under this offering will be required to sign a two-year employment contract prior to being hired.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No felony or domestic violence convictions.
  • Must pass and maintain department physical fitness standards.
  • Must successfully complete the National Police Officer Selection Examination or requirements established by the City and the City’s Police Department prior to hiring (may include written and oral examination, physical examination, background investigations, computer voice stress and/or polygraph examination, drug test, psychological evaluation, and physical fitness test).
  • Must be UTAH POST certified as a LEO (law enforcement officer) within 12 months of hire.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
  • Currently attending a Utah POST Academy to obtain SFO / LEO Certifications.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Consideration will be given for Law Enforcement Officer experience, military service, Police Officer certification, and any completed college degree.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and successfully complete the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training curriculum to obtain a Utah Police Officer Certification.
  • Effect an arrest within training guidelines and department policy using reasonable and necessary force.
  • Prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
  • Exercise independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree.
  • Operate a law enforcement vehicle during both day and night in emergency situations, including high speeds, congested traffic, and unsafe road conditions.
  • Communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels.
  • Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements from victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants.
  • Pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations, which may involve quickly entering and exiting a patrol vehicle, lifting/carrying/dragging heavy objects, climbing over obstacles, jumping from elevated surfaces, climbing through openings, jumping over obstacles/ditches/streams, crawling in confined areas, balancing on uneven surfaces, and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
  • Load, unload, aim, and fire handguns, shotguns, and other agency firearms under stress and at prescribed proficiency levels.
  • Perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas, which may involve feeling for objects, walking for extended periods, detaining people, and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons.
  • Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods.
  • Engage in law enforcement patrol functions, including working rotating shifts, walking foot patrol, and physically checking building security.
  • Effectively communicate with people, including juveniles, by giving information and directions, mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes.
  • Demonstrate communication skills in court and other formal settings.
  • Detect and collect evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions and that indicate the presence of dangerous conditions.
  • Endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with hostile views and opinions of suspects and other people in an antagonistic environment.
  • Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including directing traffic, administering emergency medical aid, lifting/dragging/carrying people away from danger, and securing/evacuating people from areas.
  • Process and transport prisoners and committed mental patients using handcuffs and other appropriate restraints.
  • Put on and operate a gas mask in situations where chemical munitions are being deployed.
  • Extinguish small fires using extinguishers and other appropriate means.
  • Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including preparing and processing citations, affidavits, and warrants.
  • Serve as an agent of the court in serving warrants, subpoenas, summonses, etc.
  • Process arrested suspects, including taking photographs and obtaining fingerprint impressions.
  • Perform duties that actively prevent or detect crime and enforce criminal statutes or ordinances.
  • Respond to situations involving threats to public safety and make emergency decisions affecting the lives and health of others.
  • Perform duties that consist of providing community protection.
  • Perform other related tasks as required.
