About The Position

The Police Officer Trainee attends and successfully completes a State of North Carolina approved Basic Law Enforcement Training Program along with obtaining a passing score on the state certification examination. Successful satisfaction of the requirement for the position of Police Officer Trainee, will result in advancement to Police Officer I. Upon advancement to Police Officer I, the employee will be required to successfully complete a field training program which will allow them to perform entry level protective service law enforcement duties and tasks. An employee in this class is assigned to structured training through a local community college for the purposes of competing Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET). The Basic Law Enforcement Training Program is structured to prepare students with the cognitive and physical skill sets needed to become certified law enforcement officers. It is comprised of classroom training and practical exercises that develop essential core skills while focusing on ethics and professionalism. An employee in this class Performs student trainee duties consistent with the requirements of the state mandated Basic Law Enforcement Program which include but are not limited to academic, physical, and practical training. Additionally, all mandated attendance requirements must be met as defined by the state, applicable community college and or the Town of Wendell. Candidates in this position must all adhere to all individual rules and regulations required by the applicable Community College and the Town of Wendell.

Requirements

Ability to learn and apply general knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, and procedures
Ability to learn and apply general knowledge of departmental standard operating policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
Ability to learn and apply knowledge of practices, materials, techniques, and equipment pertinent to job assignment.
Ability to learn and apply skills in recognizing criminal human behavior when confronted with difficult situations
Skills in using effective communication practices including focused listening
Ability to learn and apply skills in the use of firearms and other authorized law enforcement equipment
Skills in the operation and uses of personal computers including word processing and database software
Ability to learn and apply skills necessary to act quickly and properly in emergency situations
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and the public.
Ability to express thoughts clearly, both orally and in writing using good grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary
Ability to work varied shifts and assignments including undercover activity
Ability to develop a positive public image and exercise appropriate judgment in all situations.
Graduation from high school or GED and an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must meet the state mandated minimum requirement for admission to a Basic Law Enforcement Training Program.
Willingness to be assigned to and complete Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) and successful completion of state certification examination as required by NC Criminal Justice Training Standards Commission.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Must meet and maintain all minimum state and local attendance, training and education requirements for the position as well as the requirements of the assigned Community College.
Candidates must successfully complete a pre-determined hiring process in addition to a psychological examination, physical examination, drug screen, background investigation and a polygraph/voice stress analysis.
Willingness to be assigned to and complete Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) and successful completion of state certification examination as required by NC Criminal Justice Training Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

Actively participates in all classroom and practical exercises as required by the BLET program in which they are enrolled.
Demonstrates required proficiency through academy or practical skills testing in all curriculum areas of the BLET program in which they are enrolled.
Meets all mandatory attendance policies for the BLET program in which they are enrolled.
Obtain a passing score on the state mandated law enforcement certification examination.
Upon completion of the trainee phase and advancement to Police Officer I, the employee will perform entry-level law enforcement work under the direct supervision of a Training Officer/Supervisor which may include the following:
Under direct supervision, patrols streets in a police car, on bicycle or on foot; checks doors and windows; examines premises of unoccupied residences or buildings; detects unusual conditions, may maintain surveillance and observation for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects; report dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions.
Assists fully qualified officers in responding to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior; completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted.
Investigates traffic accidents; issues traffic citations; directs traffic and participates in other emergency operation activities; conducts special traffic checkpoints to enforce seatbelt, alcohol, speed, or other laws
Performs investigations of accidents or possible crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; performs investigative tasks, arrests and processes criminal suspects; presents findings in court.
Sets up traffic enforcement zones and issues citations for violation of traffic regulations; conducts DWI and license checking stations.
Serves warrants; apprehends and processes criminal suspects and transports to magistrate and/or County detention facilities.
Regulates and directs vehicular traffic at busy times at local schools and when traffic signal malfunctions or accidents require.
Prepares records and reports of activities.
Advises the public on laws and local ordinances; serves papers as needed.
Assists stranded motorists; gives information and directions to visitors and the general public.
Makes presentations to schools and civic groups.
Performs other related duties as required.
