About The Position

This is an entry-level police recruit position. The purpose of this classification is to attend a police academy, successfully complete all required training, and become a fully trained and certified Police Officer. This class is distinguished from the Police Officer class in that incumbents are not yet certified and are under direct supervision. This class works within a defined training program to learn City policies and procedures, state and federal laws, and departmental regulations.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be at least 20.5 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age at the time of academy graduation.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona Driver's License or be able to obtain one by date of hire.
  • Must be able to pass a physical examination, including a vision and hearing test.
  • Must be able to pass a psychological examination.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, including a polygraph examination.
  • Must be able to pass a written examination.
  • Must be able to pass a physical fitness assessment.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Must not have any felony convictions.
  • Must not have any domestic violence convictions.
  • Must not have any convictions for crimes involving dishonesty or moral turpitude.
  • Must not have any excessive traffic violations.
  • Must be of good moral character.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related field.
  • Previous law enforcement experience.
  • Military experience.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Attends and successfully completes all required training at a police academy.
  • Learns and applies principles, methods, and techniques of law enforcement and crime prevention.
  • Learns and applies federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Learns and applies departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Develops and maintains proficiency in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment.
  • Participates in simulated law enforcement scenarios and exercises.
  • Under direct supervision, may perform limited law enforcement duties as part of the training program.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate and thorough reports and records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
