About The Position

Police Cadet Scholarship recipients will attend the Basic Recruit class at one of the FDLE Criminal Justice Training Centers to receive training for State of Florida certification as a law enforcement officer. Training classes are typically held Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and lasts approximately 6 months. Those selected will be hired as a City of North Port employee in a Police Cadet position and will receive pay and benefits during the training period. A Police Cadet would also be those who need to attend the FDLE Criminal Justice Training Centers for the Corrections to Law Enforcement Cross-over Academy and those qualified to attend the FDLE Equivalency of Training Course. Police Cadets who successfully complete all training required by the State of Florida to obtain certification as a law enforcement officer and pass the State examination will be reclassified as Police Officer. At the time the Police Cadet is sworn-in as a Police Officer, all benefits of the current labor contract will be afforded.

Requirements

Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and a citizen of the United States.
Be of good moral character with no felony arrest(s) or misdemeanor convictions involving moral character, domestic violence and perjury of false statements.
Candidate is required to pass all background checks along with successful passing of drug test, polygraph test and psychological evaluation.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.

Responsibilities

Attends and successfully completes the full-time Basic Recruit Training Program at a Florida Criminal Justice Training Center.
Passes the State of Florida’s Law Enforcement Certification Exam within sixty days of graduation from the training program.
May be assigned to specific units within the department in a support role requiring the performance of specialized duties while on breaks from school or in an emergency situation.
