About The Position

The Police Officer I is a sworn law enforcement position responsible for providing a full range of law enforcement services. This role involves enforcing laws, investigating complaints and incidents, maintaining order, assisting the public, identifying criminal activity, apprehending offenders, and collaborating with the community to resolve issues. Officers are expected to conduct complex investigations, collect evidence, prepare detailed reports, and testify in court. Proficiency in the use of police equipment, including firearms and deadly force when appropriate, is required. The position also involves cooperation with other agencies and interaction with various University departments and external service providers. Officers may participate in crowd control and dignitary protection, and experienced officers may take on specialized roles such as Field Training Officers or Evidence Technicians. The role requires support for the UW-Stout University and Police Department's mission, vision, and core values.

Requirements

  • At least 21 years of age by hire date
  • Must possess or be eligible to possess a Wisconsin Driver’s License.
  • Minimum of 60 college credits earned/completed within 5 years from date of hire.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Good work habits, such as attendance, punctuality, accountability.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and special events.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in criminal justice or related field.
  • Prior law enforcement experience, especially in a campus, community-oriented, or municipal setting.
  • Working knowledge in the use of CAD systems, MACH Client and TraCS.
  • Specialized training in campus/community policing, crisis intervention, or threat assessment.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Demonstrated experience in problem-solving policing, de-escalation, and conflict mediation.
  • Understanding of Clery Act, Title IX, FERPA, and other laws/regulations that impact campus safety.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces laws, investigates complaints, and investigates incidents that may have an impact on the University.
  • Maintains order, assists people, identifies criminal activity, and apprehends and arrests offenders.
  • Identifies the source of problems in the Stout community and works with the community to resolve issues.
  • Conducts complex investigations, takes photographs, and collects physical evidence.
  • Prepares complete investigative reports and testifies to their contents when required.
  • Maintains a high level of proficiency in the use of police equipment, including the handling and use of firearms, and is capable of using deadly force when appropriate.
  • Works in cooperation with officers from other agencies and interacts with persons from other University departments, mental health and social services agencies.
  • Participates in crowd control and dignitary protection details.
  • Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others.
  • Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws.
  • Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community.
  • Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to the institutional community.
  • Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information.
