About The Position

This work unit exists to provide a safe environment conducive to and supportive of education at Fort Lewis College. This purpose requires many roles from unit personnel. The preservation of a peaceful community, providing physically safe grounds and buildings, enforcing federal, state, local and campus statutes and policies, protecting persons and property, controlling crime, educating the community on crime prevention, providing emergency services, assisting other College departments in their mission, providing security for special events and specifically providing a full range of professional police services.

Requirements

  • Current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification
  • By law, a person must pass a certification examination administered by the POST Board, a physical and psychological examination, and a background check before he or she may serve as a peace officer in Colorado.
  • You must also attend an academy, which is either an agency academy or one run through a community college.
  • One (1) year of experience in a law enforcement position.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts motor, bicycle, and foot patrol in order to deter and discover criminal activity, documenting all incidents including criminal activity, safety and health hazards, unusual or suspicious activities, security problems and deficiencies, take immediate action when required on all of the above.
  • Processes crime scenes, collects and preserves evidence, photographs and diagrams crime scenes, interviews victims, witnesses and suspects.
  • Executes search and arrest warrants.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies.
  • Proactively enforces drug and alcohol laws and policies, enforces all federal state and local laws and ordinances.
  • Also enforces the rules and regulations of Fort Lewis College.
  • Assists students, faculty, staff and visitors with directions to various buildings, special functions, etc.
  • Advises students in crime prevention and personal safety.
  • Assists with motor vehicle problems such as unlocking doors, jumpstarting vehicles, assisting with flat tires, calling towing companies, locksmiths, etc.
  • Advises students on problems not directly involving law enforcement.
  • File appropriate police reports, affidavits, search & arrest warrants as appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with state law (SB217) regarding body camera recording and preservation.
  • Complete daily activity log to document shift events and ensure communication with other departments on campus.
  • Complete all contact information as required by SB 217.
  • Communicate via email, phone, text, etc. to supervisors and other members of the department to ensure tasks are being completed appropriately.
  • Directs traffic before and after special events.
  • Enforce traffic and parking regulations and issues parking tickets for violations.
  • Investigates traffic accidents including administering first aid when necessary.
  • Photographs and diagrams accident scenes.
  • Issues summons as required.
  • Prepares reports and testifies in court.
  • Attends training sessions to keep state certifications current.
  • Monitors own training file to ensure compliance and training requirements per CRS 24-31-315
