About The Position

The Police Officer I - K9 performs standard Police Officer duties with K9 as needed to support the safety and security of the campus community. Performs regular K9 searches of campus facilities, property, venues, and athletic events. Responds to bomb threats and assists with making routine checks for planted explosive devices prior to events that draw large crowds or generate controversy. Promotes UAPD’s community-oriented policing mission through programs, K9 demonstrations, community events, and community interactions. Conducts regular on-shift training and attends supervised training each month throughout the duration of the assignment to provide a safer environment for the campus community. Cares for the departmental K9 placed in their charge twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Drives a University vehicle. Must meet and adhere to established guidelines for the use of a UAPD assigned take-home vehicle.

Requirements

  • Must be a current Police Officer I in good standing at the University of Alabama.
  • Must have received a “meets expectation” or higher on most recent performance evaluation.
  • Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.
  • Must have valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University polices.
  • Must have home ownership or written consent from the assignee’s landlord to house the canine on their property.
  • Physically capable of controlling K9 partner, climbing stairs, obstacles, and elevation changes with K9 partner.
  • Able to lift and carry K9 partner in the event of a K9 injury.
  • Demonstrated initiative to maintain and improve K9 team performance.
  • Ability to observe and assess behavioral patterns in K9.
  • Ability to foster a positive bond with K9 partner.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years of law enforcement experience as a sworn police officer.
  • Previous teaching or training experience.
  • Previous K9 handler experience.
  • Previous Bomb Technician or EOD experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
