About The Position

This recruitment is for certified police officers only. Police work entails the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances of the City of Miami. In conjunction with these aspects, the police officer will also be concerned with specialized investigative procedures, family crisis problems, community-related school resources, and as a Field Training Officer. These specialized abilities shall be acquired through advanced educational requirements of police officers. Work involves responsibility for performing police assignments. Work typically consists of patrolling in designated areas on an assigned shift, performed in a patrol vehicle. Work may involve an element of personal danger and employees must be able to act without direct supervision and exercise independent judgment during emergencies. Police officers may receive special assignments in plain-clothes investigation, crash investigation or other specialized areas. Interaction with the community is necessary in order to identify problems and explore effective solutions that enhance the quality of life in the assigned zone. Assignments and general instructions are received from a superior officer, who reviews work methods and results through reports, personal inspection, and discussion.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be a minimum of nineteen (19) years of age by the closing date of the recruitment.
  • Applicants must submit a copy of a valid driver's license from any state, provided that prior to appointment a valid State of Florida Class E, or higher, driver's license is submitted to the Miami Police Department's Recruitment and Selection Unit.
  • Applicants must be currently certified as law enforcement officers by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
  • State of Florida Basic Recruit Certificate of Compliance issued by Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). OR Certificate of successful completion of the State of Florida Certification examination for law enforcement.
  • Applicants must have at least 20/30 vision in each eye with correction and must be binocular and monocular of 20/100 vision in each eye without correction (glasses or contacts).
  • Depth and color perception must be within normal limits.
  • In accordance with Florida Statute 943.13, applicants must not have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Successful completion of a stringent background investigation, which includes an orientation, polygraph examination (stringent guidelines as to moral character will be applied); physical ability test, psychological and a post-offer medical examination are required.
  • An interview may also be required during the selection process.
  • Proof of Age in one of the following forms: Copy of valid Driver's License, Birth Certificate, Naturalization Certification, or U.S. Passport.
  • Proof of certifications in one of the following forms: State of Florida Basic Recruit Certificate of Compliance issued by Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). OR Certificate of successful completion of the State of Florida Certification examination for law enforcement.

Nice To Haves

  • Bargaining unit members hired directly as certified Police Officers with prior law enforcement experience, not including corrections, who are not required to attend the academy, shall be placed at pay steps in commensurate with their years of prior law enforcement experience at the City not to exceed step 8.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols neighborhoods of the City in a patrol vehicle to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, and to enforce traffic regulations.
  • Answers calls and complaints involving homicide, rape, robbery, burglary, larceny and any emergencies or disturbances that arise which may require police intervention.
  • At the scene of a crime, administers first aid, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, obtains information from witnesses, rescue victims, detains and arrests suspects; performs CPR as necessary.
  • Assists in controlling crowds.
  • Investigates cases involving missing persons and juveniles.
  • Investigates crimes such as thefts, vandalism, phone threats, and lewd conduct; interviews victims and witnesses; interrogates suspects; searches for evidence.
  • Conducts crash investigations providing first aid to victims and taking safeguards to prevent further accidents.
  • Interviews principals and witnesses; makes written statements; examines vehicles and roadways; takes necessary street measurements; clears the scene of obstruction and wreckage.
  • Prepares investigative reports and maintains necessary records for presentation in court; testifies in court.
  • When assigned to assist communications unit supervisory personnel, officers help screen requests for police and other emergency services, and coordinates requests with available police personnel.
  • When assigned to plain-clothes investigations, the police officer performs follow-up investigations in robberies, burglaries, and larcenies. This would include interviewing witnesses, making supplemental reports, and apprehending suspects involved.
  • From specialized training in the areas of social, cultural, and interpersonal relationships, the officer will be called upon to mediate crises to avoid destructive ends.
  • Helps to resolve quality of life issues in designated neighborhoods by utilizing problem-solving methods such as the Scanning, Analysis, Response, Assessment model (SARA).
  • Works proactively to resolve neighborhood concerns by establishing partnerships with residents, merchants, schools, churches, community-based organizations, governmental agencies/offices, and other groups in the designated neighborhoods in accordance with the Department’s Community Policing mission.
  • Utilizes crime analysis data to address crime issues in their assigned districts or zones.
  • Field Training Officers have the responsibility to instruct, supervise and evaluate novice police officers that have successfully completed their formal academy training, thereby providing them with a period of on-the-job-training.
