About The Position

The University of Mississippi Police Department is seeking a Police Lieutenant to provide leadership, supervision, and operational oversight for assigned patrol shifts and specialized functions. This role directs and coordinates officers engaged in patrol, security, and traffic enforcement to ensure a safe campus environment. Responsibilities include supervising shift operations, reviewing reports, conducting investigations, ensuring policy compliance, and maintaining high standards of professionalism. The Lieutenant responds to critical incidents, guides during complex situations, and may assume command in the absence of higher-ranking personnel. This position is key in developing and implementing departmental policies, procedures, and training programs, and staying current on applicable laws and campus regulations, including Clery Act reporting. The role also involves evaluating employee performance, fostering officer growth through mentorship and training, and conducting operational duties such as patrolling, field supervision, investigations, arrests, and presenting evidence. Collaboration with campus partners and external agencies, serving as a departmental representative, and supporting community engagement are also crucial. Additional duties include conducting security assessments, supervising support staff, managing evidence, and ensuring proper documentation and chain of custody.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (Required)
  • Relevant experience: 5 Years
  • 3 years supervisory experience (Required)
  • Internal Candidates: Candidates promoted to Sergeant from within the University of Mississippi Police Department must have at least one year of service at the rank of Sergeant to be eligible for promotion.
  • Internal Candidates: Candidates hired at the rank of Sergeant must have four continuous years of service with The University of Mississippi Police Department to be eligible for promotion.
  • External Candidates: Verifiable supervisory experience at the Lieutenant level or above for a minimum of two (2) years.
  • Any person receiving an appointment that is not certified by the MS BELOST must become certified within one year of the appointment date, or as outlined in state law.
  • Must provide cover letter and resume when applying.

  • Ensure effective documentation and chain of custody procedures.
  • Implement the unit personnel resource allocation plan including training, supervision, and resolution of personnel issues.
  • Serve as a unit representative and point of contact with law enforcement agencies, institutional work units, news media, social services, and special interest groups.
  • Develop and communicate directives to staff and monitor compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Schedule logistics and resources to protect life and property, preserve peace and good order, and provide emergency aid.
  • Organize and conduct crime prevention training programs.
  • Prepare and present evidence in civil and criminal court and university proceedings.
  • Review and approve officer reports on incidents and criminal investigations.
