About The Position

This is a paid internship position with the Kearney Police Department/BCSO. Interns will report to the Training Coordinator and will be compensated for their work. The internship serves at the discretion of the Chief of Police and may be terminated at any time under specific circumstances, including criminal charges, failure to follow orders, unauthorized disclosure of information, or failure to complete assignments. Interns are required to maintain a daily activity log and abide by the department's rules and code of conduct. Interns will receive instruction on applicable policies and procedures, adhere to dress regulations, and are expected to serve a minimum number of hours per week as required by their college/university, not exceeding forty hours per week. Assignments may include clerical work, research, cataloging property/evidence/records, ride-alongs, and attending training or events. Punctuality and timely completion of assignments are expected. The Training Coordinator will review all intern assignments prior to completion.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years old.
  • A citizen of the United States or possess a valid student visa.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university as a junior or senior.
  • Include a resume and letter of recommendation from their advisor addressed to the Kearney Police Department.
  • If licensed to operate a vehicle, the applicant's driving privilege must be valid.
  • Driver's history must be free of convictions from driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.
  • Pass a background check including a check of their fingerprints and an inquiry through the National Crime Information Center.
  • The background check must not disclose any of the following: a conviction for any offense involving theft or theft related statutes; a conviction for any offense stemming from an incident of domestic violence; a conviction for any offense where the underlying actions would be incompatible with a person serving in a position of public trust, as determined by the Chief of Police.
  • Vision must be 20/100 correctable to 20/20, with contact lenses no upper acuity limit correctable to 20/20.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Ability to frequently perceive nature of sounds by ear.
  • Ability to frequently express ideas by means of spoken words.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written material.
  • Ability to listen to and apply information and instructions.

Nice To Haves

  • Interns are not eligible for overtime benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a written daily activity log to turn in at the completion of the internship program.
  • Abide by the rules and code of conduct as indicated by the Kearney Police Department.
  • Receive instruction on applicable policies and procedures related to their assignment.
  • Serve a minimum number of hours per week as directed by requirements of their college/university, but in no case shall the service be less than eight (8) hours or more than forty (40) hours per week.
  • Be eligible for any assignment deemed appropriate by the Training Coordinator; however, in most cases the assignments will consist of light clerical work, research and assistance with cataloging property, evidence and records, ride-a-longs with officers, attend any training deemed appropriate and attend any event deemed appropriate.
  • Be punctual for all assignments/appointments and complete all assigned work in a competent and timely manner.
  • Climb inclines and ladders, uneven surfaces, balance required.
  • Walk moderate amounts.
  • Stoop/Bend frequently.
  • Sit about 50 percent of the time.
  • Perform tasks requiring frequent reaching, overhead as well as horizontal.
  • Operate motor vehicles or bicycles requiring moderate ability.
  • Think logically and quickly during an emergency.
  • Organize information and prepare written records.
