About The Position

This is intermediate level, certified, civilian, technical, law enforcement work providing various non-emergency police services related to the basic investigation and reporting of police incidents and the performance of basic crime scene processes. Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under limited supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its lack of supervisory responsibility and from lower classes by its emphasis on performance of police services tasks of intermediate difficulty and complexity requiring basic training and certification. This position level is expected to perform duties associated with all lower levels of the Police Service Technician series. Incumbents in this position are expected to actively participate in all relevant training and certification opportunities in preparation for progression within the Police Service Technician series.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school, or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, and one (1) year of post-high school work experience serving the public at-large.,or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Valid Florida Driver License required.
  • Successful completion of the earliest available Gainesville Police Department’s Field Training and Evaluation program for Police Service Technician I.
  • Successful completion of an approved training which satisfies the requirement of Florida State Statute 316.640 and encompasses the essential functions for Police Service Technician I prior to completion of probationary status.
  • Successful completion of Florida Criminal Information Center / National Criminal Information Center (FCIC/NCIC) certification, or proof of certification prior to completion of probationary status.
  • Successful completion of the earliest available State of Florida School Crossing Guard and Traffic Direction classes or proof of current certification.
  • Successful completion of the earliest available Florida Department of Transportation School Cross Guard Trainer program.
  • Successful completion of the earliest available Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification course or proof of current certification.
  • Knowledge of City geography.
  • Basic knowledge of laws, ordinances, regulations and statues, which govern police service functions.
  • Basic knowledge of City parking enforcement ordinances and State statutes, which govern City traffic functions.
  • Basic knowledge of occupational hazards and accident prevention methods connected with assigned area of responsibility.
  • Ability to successfully complete a combination of advanced crime scene training and advanced accident investigation training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively with the general public in a professional, caring, and respectful manner including when exposed to verbal abuse.
  • Ability to act independently while following department guidelines and policies.
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers.
  • Applicants must be able to meet health, physical, and background standards set forth by the City of Gainesville and the State of Florida.

Responsibilities

  • Provides timely, courteous, and knowledgeable response to community needs within area of assignment.
  • Responds to non-emergency police incidents including, but not limited to, found property, abandoned property, burglaries, missing persons, criminal mischief, forgeries, fraud, theft, and obscene or threatening phone calls.
  • Prepares Gainesville Police Department investigative reports.
  • Investigates traffic crashes, prepares reports, and issues traffic citations.
  • Performs basic crime scene duties including lifting fingerprints, taking measurements, taking photographs, collecting evidence, securing crime scenes, and writing crime scene reports.
  • Attends work on continuous and regular basis.
  • Transports citizens or employees as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
