About The Position

The City of Coronado is accepting applications for a Police Dispatcher. This role involves using radio equipment and various computer programs to handle emergencies, establish priorities, and manage multiple situations simultaneously with a high degree of accuracy. Incumbents work under general supervision and are expected to perform duties independently after training, using established guidelines and judgment to resolve dispatch problems. The ideal candidate will be customer service-oriented with strong interpersonal and communication skills, possess good judgment, a high attention to detail, and the ability to quickly gather critical information from distressed callers. Success requires excellent multi-tasking abilities to interview callers on emergency and non-emergency lines while operating the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, monitoring frequencies, and dispatching police, fire, and emergency medical services.

Requirements

  • Completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training in communications, public safety dispatch, or a related field.
  • Typing certificate with a net corrected speed of 40 words per minute dated within one year of the time of application.
  • CLEET Certificate from the Department of Justice (DOJ) is required prior to database access.
  • P.O.S.T. Dispatch Certificate required within one year of appointment.
  • Ability to pass the online CritiCall test, which simulates a dispatch environment and measures multitasking, prioritization, map reading, memory recall, comprehension, and data entry skills.
  • Ability to pass an oral panel interview.
  • Ability to pass a pre-background check process, including a Personal History Statement, polygraph examination, and law enforcement background investigation.
  • Ability to pass a psychological evaluation and a medical exam, including a drug screen.
  • Submission of verification of legal right to work in the United States (E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in emergency services dispatching is highly desirable.
  • Public safety telecommunications or dispatch experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Use radio equipment, varied computer programs, and printers in situations requiring incumbents to establish priorities and handle several emergencies simultaneously.
  • Work with a high level of accuracy.
  • Perform duties without constant supervision after training.
  • Use established guidelines, precedent, and judgment in resolving dispatch problems and service requests.
  • Request direction from a supervisor in situations requiring the establishment of or departure from standard operations.
  • Use judgment in advising the watch commander of pertinent field problems and service requests.
  • Effectively interview callers on emergency 9-1-1 and non-emergency lines.
  • Operate the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Monitor numerous frequencies.
  • Format requests for police, fire, and emergency medical services to the appropriate agencies and departments.
