About the Position: The University Police department is dedicated to ensuring the University Community's right to a crime free environment through exemplary and professional service. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Police Dispatcher I. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. Under the administration of the Chief of Police, the University Police Department is responsible for the safety, health, and well-being of the University community. The Communications Unit is a primary Public Safely answering point. Provides essential communications between campus law enforcement headquarters, campus police, community service officers, and parking officers in the field, outside emergency and law enforcement agencies and the public. Screens all 9-1-1, blue emergency phones and business lines to determine the appropriate level of service needed in emergency and non-emergency situations and allocates appropriate personnel and resources to incidents. Enters calls for service into a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) computer system, accesses campus information, and queries local, state, and national law enforcement databases. Monitors the campus alarm systems, contacts appropriate parties, initiates police and/or fire response and set off the evacuation of a building or the entire campus if necessary. Required to multi-task and must do several things at one time, quickly and efficiently. Communicates via radio to units in the field while also answering the phone. Also ensures the interview room is successfully recorded and activity logged when a subject is being held inside. Works independently, reacts quickly, and demonstrates good judgment and discretion in stressful situations. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • One year of verifiable experience using a switchboard and two-way radio communication system in a law enforcement or comparable agency setting within the last ten years.
  • Completion of, or the ability to attend and successfully complete, the Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) dispatcher course.
  • Ability to pass supplemental POST requirements for dispatchers such as a background check, physical requirements, and other related requirements.
  • Ability to effectively use the phonetic alphabet, speak clearly and concisely, follow oral and written instructions, transfer information accurately, and handle a wide range of interpersonal interactions effectively.
  • Ability to learn to use applicable automated dispatch and law enforcement systems and databases.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
  • CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
  • Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
  • A valid California driver’s license.
  • California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) Trainer Certification.
  • State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Dispatcher Certification.
