About The Position

The Kenosha Police Department has established the student internship program to assist students in furthering their experience and education in the field of criminal justice. The goal of this program is to expose selected students to a sampling of the training, responsibilities, and duties required of a police officer in order to provide efficient and effective police services within the community. The Kenosha Police Department will make reasonable efforts to accommodate the academic requirements and other responsibilities of applicants. The length of the internship is one semester. We have internship availability for fall, summer or winter semesters. No more than two students will be selected for any one semester.

Requirements

Minimum grade point average of 2.5
Full-time student at an accredited university or technical college pursuing a degree in criminal justice (student pursuing a bachelor’s degree must be a junior or senior).
Students must be sponsored by a college with a requirement to complete an internship.
Detail-oriented, organized, able to complete projects within timelines and under minimal supervision.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, research methods, and technical writing.

Oral Interview to evaluate communication skills, knowledge of law enforcement and the level of interest in the internship.

Responsibilities

Assist students in furthering their experience and education in the field of criminal justice.
Expose selected students to a sampling of the training, responsibilities, and duties required of a police officer.
Provide practical work experience that complements academic coursework and potentially earns course credit.
Involve college students in various aspects of police work.
Integrate theory and practice.
Gain valuable work experience, on-the-job training, and develop a professional networking base.
Work in specific areas such as Records Department, Detective Bureau, Court Liaison Function, Grant Writing and Oversight, Emergency Communication Center, Fiscal Oversight, Police Operations and Police Administration.
Participate in sit-alongs, ride-alongs, and tours to be exposed to more aspects of the Department and operations.
Complete project assignments which may include surveys, data entry, research projects, case follow-up, community outreach, social media development, and assistance.
Keep a journal of activities to aid in the evaluation process.
