About The Position

The University Police Department at Illinois State University is creating a pool of qualified candidates for future openings for the position of Police Corporal. The primary function of a Police Corporal in patrol is to provide basic police service to the community and to act as the Shift Commander in their absence. This role is located on campus in Normal, Illinois. Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • No record of conviction of a felony or misdemeanors as identified in the Illinois Police Training Act (50 ILCS 705 et seq.), or a crime involving moral turpitude
  • Eligibility for bonding, if required by the employing institution
  • Successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Officers' Training course as prescribed by the Illinois Law Enforcement Officers' Training & Standards Board, if required by the employing institution. All recruit law enforcement officers who successfully complete this course after September 1, 1984 are required to successfully pass the Law Enforcement Officers' Certification Examination. (Applicants lacking such training at time of appointment will be required to complete such requirement during, and as a part of, their probationary period of employment in this class.)
  • At least 21 years of age upon employment
  • One (1) year of experience as a police officer in a federal, state, county, college or university, municipal, or public institutional police organization having a recognized merit system
  • Completion of a post-offer pre-employment physical exam
  • Successful result of the pre-employment physical
  • Successful completion of a psychological assessment
  • Successfully completing a pre-employment drug screen/test
  • Ability to walk/stand during patrolling duty
  • Ability to wear utility belt weighing up to 15 pounds as part of official uniform
  • Ability to lift, carry, and push/pull up to maximum physical ability during emergency situations
  • Ability to bend, crouch, kneel and reach overhead
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs/ladders when necessary
  • Ability to perform motor vehicle patrol in designated squad car
  • Ability to discharge a variety of firearms, pursue suspects, fight/wrestle with suspects when necessary, chase suspects, and use a variety of less than lethal weapons
  • Ability to utilize various electronic communication equipment and operate computers
