About The Position

This position involves leading, overseeing, and participating in complex law enforcement and crime prevention activities. The Corporal serves as the Watch Commander for an assigned shift in the absence of a Sergeant, leading, planning, training, and reviewing the work of police patrol staff. Responsibilities include planning, directing, and participating in law enforcement and crime prevention programs, patrolling designated areas to maintain order, responding to public calls, investigating crimes, gathering and analyzing evidence, and making arrests. The role also involves training and evaluating officers, providing instruction on weapons use and defensive tactics, and promoting subordinate career development. Marginal functions include testifying in court, representing the department at events, and responding to medical emergencies.

Requirements

  • Two years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience.
  • Completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by coursework in police science, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a P.O.S.T. Basic certificate.
  • Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a law enforcement program.
  • Knowledge of principles of lead supervision and training.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of modern law enforcement tactics, methods, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of techniques and applications of self-defense and proper use of force.
  • Knowledge of care, maintenance, and operation of firearms and other modern police equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard broadcasting principles of a police radio system.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of data collection and analysis.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of report preparation.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in interviewing witnesses, victims, or suspects.
  • Knowledge of investigative techniques, procedures, and sources of information.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and preservation.
  • Knowledge of laws governing the apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons accused of felonies and misdemeanors.
  • Knowledge of principles and applications of public relations.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the local area.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Ability to lead, organize, and review the work of staff in the area of work assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Watch Commander for an assigned shift in the absence of a Sergeant.
  • Lead, plan, train, and review the work of police patrol staff responsible for law enforcement and crime prevention.
  • Plan, direct, and participate in the administration of responsible law enforcement and crime prevention programs and duties.
  • Patrol a designated area of the City to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes, and enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances.
  • Respond to general public service calls, crime victims, traffic accidents, and related misdemeanors and felony incidents.
  • Identify, gather, analyze, and process evidence related to the investigation of crimes; interview witnesses, suspects, and victims; effect arrests pursuant to penal codes; prepare related police reports.
  • Participate in training and evaluating assigned officers, including providing instruction on weapons use, defensive tactics, and arrest techniques.
  • Provide training, guidance, and counseling to assigned Police Officers; promote career development of subordinates.
  • Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Testify in municipal and superior courts as required.
  • Participate in and represent the Police Department at various City events.
  • Respond to medical emergencies; provide first-aid if required.
  • Perform related duties as required.
