About The Position

The City of Oakland is seeking experienced Police Dispatchers to join the Oakland Police Department Communications Division. This is a continuous recruitment, and qualified candidates are encouraged to apply immediately. The role involves receiving and screening telephone calls, analyzing calls for priority, using computer-aided equipment for data entry and relaying information, running queries in automated warrant systems, answering public inquiries, and dispatching from a mobile command center. The position requires individuals who can act promptly, logically, and decisively, communicate clearly, comprehend and retain information, maintain a calm and professional demeanor under stress, adapt to changing situations, multitask, be self-motivated, and display a high level of integrity. The role also demands emotional stability and a satisfactory record as a law-abiding citizen, with final candidates undergoing a thorough background investigation, polygraph, and medical examination. Excessive alcohol usage, drug abuse, a poor work record, or falsification of employment information are grounds for disqualification.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of full-time responsible work experience as a Dispatcher in a law enforcement environment.
  • Applicants shall not have had a break in service as a Dispatcher in a law enforcement environment greater than three years (36-months) prior to application.
  • Applicants currently working in California as a Dispatcher in a law enforcement environment must possess a valid Public Safety Dispatcher's Basic Course Certificate issued by the California P.O.S.T.
  • Applicants currently working outside of California as a Dispatcher in a law enforcement environment must pass the P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatchers' Basic Course within one year of appointment as a condition of continued employment.

Responsibilities

  • Receiving and screening telephone calls and recording data

  • Using computer-aided keyboard and data entry equipment or manually recording and relaying information (often of an emergency nature) to appropriate units
  • Receiving, transmitting, and recording data
  • Running queries in automated warrant information systems
