About The Position

This position involves participating in independent study and formal classroom instruction to gain proficiency in the basic skills required to become a licensed Texas Peace Officer. Upon graduation from the Police Academy, the employee will be responsible for crime prevention, detection, and investigation, maintaining law and order, patrolling assigned city areas, enforcing traffic regulations, investigating incidents, interviewing victims and witnesses, apprehending suspects, responding to calls for service, serving warrants, writing reports, ensuring building security, testifying in court, communicating with dispatch, and administering first aid. The role also requires operating an MDT and rendering credible testimony. Additional duties may be assigned as required.

Requirements

  • Must have a GED or High School Diploma.
  • Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license with a good driving record (or equivalent from another state).
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license within 30 days of residency.
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background check.
  • Must be able to pass a polygraph test.
  • Must be able to pass a drug/alcohol screen test.
  • Must be able to pass a physical examination.
  • Must be able to pass a psychological examination.
  • Must pass the written portion of the Job-Related Abilities Test (JRAT) with a score of at least 70.
  • Must pass the physical portion of the Job-Related Abilities Test (JRAT).
  • Vision must be correctable to 20/20 in both eyes.
  • Must have normal hearing.
  • Must possess functional dexterity in both hands.
  • Ability to deal firmly and courteously with other Police Officers and the public.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper course of action.
  • Ability to speak and write the English language effectively.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations.
  • Knowledge of modern police practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances, particularly the laws of arrest and evidence.
  • Some knowledge of the geography of the city.
  • Some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department.
  • Some knowledge of first aid principles.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in independent study and formal classroom instruction to become proficient in the basic skills necessary to become a licensed Texas Peace Officer.
  • Be responsible for the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes.

  • Patrol assigned areas of the city in a Police vehicle.
  • Enforce traffic regulations, including issuing citations.
  • Investigate collisions, crimes against property and persons, and complaints.
  • Interview victims and witnesses.
  • Take affidavits.
  • Apprehend persons suspected of crimes.
  • Respond to calls for service including disturbances, burglar alarms, gang activity, and traffic/parking violations.
  • Serve warrants.
  • Write various reports including offense, collision, and arrest reports.
  • Check buildings and stores for security.
  • Testify in court.
  • Take calls from 911 Center Dispatchers and keep them informed of location and status.
  • Administer first aid.
  • Operate MDT.
  • Render credible testimony.
