About The Position

The City of Eagan is accepting applications for Police Cadets. This is a training position designed to evaluate candidates for the role of Police Officer. Individuals hired will support the police department in various capacities, including fleet maintenance, public assistance, errands, and community outreach. Successful candidates must demonstrate continuous progress towards a degree in Law Enforcement or a related field and be considered a viable candidate for promotion to Police Officer. The City of Eagan encourages diverse candidates to apply.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent G.E.D.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution majoring in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or a related field OR already possess a degree.
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree must be completed during duration of employment.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, physical and psychological exam, medical exam, and drug test.
  • Ability to perform all essential position functions under the working conditions described.
  • Involuntary terminations within the past five (5) years may result in application rejection for non-police, sheriff, and government-related positions.
  • Involuntary terminations WILL result in application rejection for police, sheriff, and government-related positions.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all squad cars are serviced at proper intervals and monitor associated equipment, recommending replacement as necessary.
  • Work with sworn staff to ensure they have clean, properly functioning vehicles for shift use.
  • Deliver vehicles for service and perform minor repairs if able.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of garages and other police department areas.
  • Manage, inventory, and order miscellaneous supplies, including refilling fire extinguishers and ordering oxygen.
  • Maintain the speed trailer, including assigning locations, set-up, take-down, data download, and report printing.
  • Assist IT with upgrades and repairs of squad laptops.
  • Assist with duties in the Property Room.
  • Respond to requests for transporting prisoners, making deliveries, and running errands, including bank deposits, subpoena service, and transporting evidence.
  • Back up the Animal Control Officer when requested and take over animal control duties in their absence.
  • Issue summons/citations for City Code Violations when applicable.
  • Assist sworn staff with duties as requested.
  • Respond to and investigate complaints, performing follow-up regarding bites, potential rabies, and quarantine needs.
  • Determine and authorize the placement of animals for treatment, shelter, or euthanasia, and make referrals to other agencies.
  • Interpret State statutes and City ordinances to take appropriate law enforcement action (e.g., snow bans, parking, junk vehicles, dog-related violations).
  • Provide public education on animal care, regulations, and wildlife management.
  • Assist sworn officers with their duties as requested or assigned.
  • Report any criminal activity occurring in the city to dispatch immediately.
  • Draft minor police reports (e.g., criminal damage to property, theft) as needed.
  • Participate and stay proficient in department-recognized defensive tactics.
  • Test participants in the Dakota County Safe Streets program.
  • Perform fingerprinting for applicant background investigations.
  • Book and release criminals for Officers/Detectives.
  • Perform manual speed surveys and input data.
  • Assist with bike rodeos and other public relations duties.
  • Process found property.
  • Testify in court and other related hearings associated with the position.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
