About The Position

Amazing Athletes is seeking a thoughtful and imaginative Poetry & Creative Writing Instructor for their afterschool program at PS166. This position is ideal for individuals who believe in the power of words and are passionate about helping K-5 students express themselves through poetry, journaling, and creative storytelling. The role involves leading engaging activities, encouraging exploration of literary elements, and fostering confidence in young writers.

Requirements

• Experience working with students, preferably elementary age.
• Strong background in creative writing, poetry, or literature.
• Experience teaching or mentoring children in writing.
• Encouraging, warm, and full of creative ideas.
• Great classroom presence and ability to inspire budding writers.
• Enrolled in a Bachelor’s program in Education, Literature, or a related field.
• Strong creative writing or poetry background.
• Experience working with children in an educational or mentoring capacity.
• Ability to create and guide age-appropriate writing prompts.
• Enthusiastic, supportive, and creative teaching style.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in curriculum development.
• Experience leading writing workshops based classes for youth.
• Passion for youth storytelling and community-based writing.

Responsibilities

• Lead fun and accessible poetry and writing activities tailored for young learners.
• Encourage students to explore rhyme, rhythm, and voice while building confidence as writers.
• Plan creative prompts and group sharing circles that invite self-expression.
• Help students create poetry books, zines, or presentations to proudly share with families.
• Collaborate with admin and complete all digital reporting tasks.
