About The Position

The Podiatrist will provide medical services to patients at the Lufkin State Supported Living Center. This role involves diagnosing and treating a wide range of foot, ankle, and lower leg conditions, including performing surgical interventions and nonsurgical treatments. The Podiatrist will also be responsible for chronic disease management, patient education, and maintaining accurate electronic medical records.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • National and State Background Check with Inquiries and Fingerprints, and Drug Screen.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of optometry with a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an ACOE-accredited program.
  • Active and current license to practice optometry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Board certification or board eligibility by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) or American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM).
  • Active DEA registration for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Minimum experience required is five (5) years.
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.

Responsibilities

  • Examine patients' feet, ankles, and lower legs to diagnose diseases, structural abnormalities, or bone and joint disorders.
  • Order, review, and interpret diagnostic tools including X-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs, and bone density tests.
  • Perform outpatient and inpatient surgical procedures, ranging from minor treatments (bunion removal, ingrown toenails, hammertoe correction) to complex reconstructive foot/ankle surgeries.
  • Administer physical therapy, prescribe joint pain medications, and apply therapeutic techniques like casting or laser therapy.
  • Provide specialized diabetic foot care and manage lower extremity complications caused by vascular disease, arthritis, and obesity.
  • Advise patients and caregivers on proper foot care, preventative health habits, appropriate footwear choices, and post-operative recovery instructions.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate, and timely electronic medical records (EMR) in compliance with healthcare regulations.
