About The Position

This position is within the Development Center Division of the Development Services Department within the City of Oklahoma City. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is under the direction of the Chief Plumbing Inspector. Journeyman level skill and knowledge relevant to the plumbing field must be acquired prior to assuming the duties of this position. Essential job functions include: traveling to various construction sites to conduct ground, rough, and final plumbing inspections related to plumbing construction, installation, repair, alteration, and maintenance of plumbing apparatus and fixtures on all structures to ensure compliance with safety and quality regulations as are specified and required by the Oklahoma City Plumbing Codes. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that plumbing systems are properly installed in order to provide for the safety, health, and welfare of the general public. All plumbing inspections are performed independently with unusual problems or situations referred to the Plumbing Inspector II and/or the Chief Plumbing Inspector. The employee must exhibit tact and diplomacy in communicating with citizens, contractors, building owners or managers, and departmental personnel concerning relevant aspects of work performed. Work products are periodically reviewed at the discretion of the Plumbing Inspector II and/or Chief Plumbing Inspector.

Requirements

• Knowledge of the current adopted Oklahoma City Plumbing and Fuel Gas Codes.
• Knowledge of installation of various types of plumbing systems.
• Knowledge of and skill in following safety procedures.
• Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and drawings.
• Skill in assessing the overall condition of different plumbing systems.
• Skill in using standard office equipment.
• Skill in recording information accurately.
• Skill in communicating verbally and in writing using tact and diplomacy.
• Ability to interpret, explain, and apply knowledge of plumbing codes to work performed.
• Ability to conduct rough, ground, and final inspections.
• Ability to work independently in the performance of assigned tasks.
• Ability and willingness to make objective decisions.
• Possession of a current State of Oklahoma Plumbing Journeyman License.
• Possession of a current State of Oklahoma Plumbing Inspector License.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a licensed Journeyman Plumber, Plumbing Contractor or Plumbing Inspector.
• Possession of valid driver license (Operator).
• Licenses must be issued by the State of Oklahoma or a state having reciprocity with the State of Oklahoma.
• The employee shall have at least five years’ experience as a licensed journeyman plumber, a licensed plumbing contractor, or have at least five years’ experience as a plumbing inspector in a municipality of 20,000 or larger population.
• The Plumbing Inspector I shall not be interested directly or indirectly in any plumbing business within the City.
• The Plumbing Inspector I shall not perform any plumbing work within the City.
• State Law and/or City Ordinance require that the employee possess or obtain a permanent State Plumbing Inspector License within one (1) year of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion.
• If an individual is selected who does not possess a permanent State Plumbing Inspector License, that individual will be classified as a Provisional Trades Inspector and be compensated at the Provisional Trades Inspector salary range until such time as the license is obtained.
• Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a State Plumbing Inspector License within one (1) year from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion.

Responsibilities
