Plumbing Engineer, R&D

Fluidstack•Austin, TX
•$169,000 - $208,000

About The Position

Fluidstack is hiring a Plumbing Engineer to join its infrastructure R&D group. The mechanical engineering team designs cooling, water, and fire systems for gigawatt-scale AI data centers as repeatable products rather than one-off site designs. The role focuses on making water systems—including make-up water, treatment, condenser and process loops, and drainage—sized, specified, and standardized for deployment across sites. The engineer will own plumbing design for data center buildings and prefabricated modules, from concept through construction documents. This includes domestic, process and make-up water, condenser water piping, drainage, and stormwater systems. The role also supports permitting, construction, and commissioning, and integrates plumbing design with cooling, water-quality, and controls engineering.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of plumbing or piping design engineering experience on industrial, mission-critical, or large commercial facilities, including at least one project taken through construction documents and commissioning.
  • Working knowledge of the IPC or UPC, IMC, local amendments, and the permitting process.
  • Hands-on experience with hydraulic calculations, pump and pipe sizing, backflow protection, and water storage design.
  • Fluency in Revit or AutoCAD MEP and a hydraulic modeling tool.
  • Experience reviewing contractor submittals and answering RFIs, with the ability to assess which deviations matter.
  • Ability to write specifications that contractors can bid without a meeting.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer license or CPD certification.
  • Data center or liquid-cooling plant experience.
  • Water treatment or industrial process piping background.

Responsibilities

  • Design domestic water, process and make-up water, condenser water piping, drainage, and stormwater systems for data center buildings and prefabricated modules, from concept through construction documents.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations and select pumps, valves, backflow preventers, water heaters, and storage.
  • Write specifications for vendors and contractors.
  • Ensure designs comply with plumbing, mechanical, and health codes across applicable jurisdictions, and address permit and inspection questions.
  • Coordinate with mechanical, water-quality, and controls engineers to integrate make-up water, treatment, and blowdown with the cooling plant.
  • Review contractor submittals and shop drawings, answer RFIs, and support installations through commissioning.
  • Translate field and commissioning findings into design changes for subsequent sites.
