Under the direction of a supervisor, designs the layout of plumbing systems; installs plumbing systems and fixtures; maintains and repairs equipment and appliances; tests backflow prevention devices; and maintains a variety of records. Incumbents are expected to work independently under limited supervision and exercise judgment in establishing work priorities, planning/estimating and laying out new installations, determining equipment and material needs, and troubleshooting to determine problems and necessary repairs. Failure to follow proper work procedures could result in serious injury to employee and/or others, especially when working with gas or cross connection. Failure to properly install, inspect and maintain backflow prevention devices could result in the contamination of drinking water, creating a health hazard to students, staff, and the public. Since incumbents interact with a variety of people in the performance of their duties, good public relations are important to succeed in this position. The class of Plumber is distinguished from the class of Sprinkler System Repair Worker in that the latter works with irrigation systems and does not install or repair sewer, gas, lateral and main potable water lines. The class of Maintenance Worker is distinguished from the class of Plumber in that the latter troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs technical problems, performs skilled installations and repairs, plans and estimates remodel projects as well as new construction, and works independently without technical supervision.
