About The Position

The Plumber is responsible for the maintenance and operations pertaining to the plumbing systems at the Culinary Institute of America’s (CIA) at the Hyde Park campus. This includes but is not limited to clearing drains, repairing or installing water, steam, irrigation, or waste lines, installing appliances, sinks, showers, and toilets, responding to radio requests, responding to emergencies and completing work orders and project work as assigned. Additionally, the Plumber plans and coordinates all activities with the Associate Director - Facilities and functions as a safety advocate and liaison for the department.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in the plumbing trades or formal trade school certification in plumbing.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to use and willingness to learn technology efficiently, including Microsoft Office, building management control systems, work order systems and related hardware devices, and learning new technology.
  • Must be able to read plans and carry them out using the tools of the trade.
  • Must be experienced with hand tools, pipe and drain cleaners and cutters, as well as basic equipment such as wrenches, soldering, welding and brazing equipment, and sewer line cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment and maintain collaborative relationships with all members of the team.
  • Demonstrated ability to show a high level of service responsiveness to customers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a commercial kitchen environment.
  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship, lasting four (4) to five (5) years, or have a similar number of years of experience working as a plumber under the supervision of a Master Plumber.
  • Experience in welding stainless steel and aluminum.
  • Hands-on experience with repairs of specialty systems such as steam and irrigation systems.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Facilities Managers and Supervisors and others with general projects and maintenance work for plumbing and related work slated for the Hyde Park campus.
  • Performs other work as assigned or needed, to further the continuity of the operations, including closing out work orders, drafting checklists, writing summary emails, and communicating with stakeholders.
  • Completes all facility inspections (rounds) as required.
  • Monitors and inspects all equipment and systems for designed operation.
  • Performs repairs to facility buildings plumbing fixtures and piping, including domestic water, steam and wastewater systems.
  • Follows blueprints, specifications, manufacturers literature and as directed.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all plumbing systems as required.
  • Completes all work orders assigned by the supervisor, Lead Person, or as directed by the Help Desk or otherwise responsible stakeholders, takes the lead with stakeholders as necessary, speaking for the department and taking the lead when interfacing with others when appropriate.
  • Understands and follows all codes and safety practices required by the Institute or government agencies.
  • Assists outside contractors as required.
  • Advises the Supervisor regarding managing inventories, ordering supplies, and purchasing requirements, as necessary, including but not limited to bidding work and/or purchases.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.
