About The Position

The Plumber operates, maintains, repairs, and installs water distribution piping, plumbing fixtures, fire sprinklers, sanitary and irrigation systems, steam and condensate systems, and swimming pool components. This role provides general maintenance services and ensures the proper functioning of campus plumbing systems. The position involves analyzing malfunctions, performing preventative maintenance, ordering parts, and interpreting technical documents. The Plumber will also assist others, perform general maintenance, conduct inspections, and provide emergency service calls. Estimating time and repair costs, completing daily logs, and performing minor repairs on fixtures like cabinets and benches are also part of the responsibilities. The role may also involve assisting in other operations and maintenance tasks for University grounds and property.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • State of Michigan Journeyman Plumbers License required.
  • Must either have a current ASSE backflow prevention certification or obtain certification within the 12-month probationary period of employment.
  • Required to obtain swimming pool operator certification.
  • Four years of job-related experience as a licensed plumber.
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License.
  • Knowledge of plumbing, maintenance, electrical, and carpentry equipment, tools, materials, systems, and work methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and instructional manuals.
  • Must demonstrate the highest standards of work performance; including but not limited to, attendance, attitude & quality workmanship.
  • Essential for successfully fulfilling the minimum job qualifications is demonstrable exemplary customer service orientation/attitude.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others and maintain good working relations with supervisors, co-workers, and the University community.
  • Ability to work alone or as member of a team, perform job duties within scheduled time limits, and adapt to rounds and emergency scheduling.
  • Ability to compile, maintain, and process reports and records using handheld PDA’s and/or other data/record keeping equipment.
  • Ability to follow and apply both routine and specific plumbing system safety procedures.
  • Ability to begin and follow through with the task(s) or plan identified in the job description, and to take the first step in performance of those duties and responsibilities.
  • Reporting of facilities or grounds maintenance needs which are observed.
  • Ability to exercise appropriate judgment, based on specific situation.
  • Ability to physically lift, carry, push, and/or pull plumbing and maintenance tools, equipment, supplies, may include ladders, piping, tools, etc.
  • Ability to physically stand, walk, climb, maintain one’s balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and handle while performing job duties.
  • Ability to pass job-related physical examination, skill test, and/or State/Federal mandated training, licensing, and/or certification requirements, within a reasonable period of time.
  • Ability to begin and follow through with the task(s) or plan identified in the job description, and to take the first step in performance of those duties and responsibilities, including reporting of facilities or grounds maintenance needs; on one's own, without prompting or direction from others.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, and install water and sewer distribution systems; may include distribution and branch feeders, swimming pool systems operation and maintenance, plumbing fixtures, control devices, and pumps.
  • Maintain, repair, and install basic distribution and irrigation systems; may include fire sprinklers, sanitary sewer, and plumbing fixtures.
  • Analyze malfunctioning of plumbing equipment and systems using tools and instruments of the trade, drawings, and visual inspection.
  • Perform preventative maintenance of plumbing equipment; may include alarm tests and documentation.
  • Order needed parts and materials.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, sketches, technical manuals, and job specifications.
  • Replace and/or install piping, valves, controls, pumps, and motors.
  • Assist others as assigned.
  • Perform general maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Conduct rounds inspections and emergency service calls on campus.
  • Estimate time and repair costs.
  • Complete daily log sheet.
  • Repair and/or build cabinets, benches, planters, etc.
  • May assist in other operations & maintenance for University grounds and property, including buildings, walks, roadways, and equipment.
