About The Position

Under general supervision of the Building Trades Manager, performs the full range of journey-level plumbing work required to install, maintain, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, modify, and replace campus plumbing systems. Maintains domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, natural gas, compressed air, irrigation, laboratory utilities, pumps, valves, fixtures, piping systems, and related equipment. Ensures all work complies with applicable codes, campus standards, and safety regulations while providing excellent customer service to the university community. Maintains accurate maintenance records using the campus computerized maintenance management system.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
  • Base knowledge of the operation of building automation systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes.
  • Ability to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems.
  • Ability to perform applicable welding work.
  • Ability to obtain necessary backflow prevention licenses.
  • Ability to make rough sketches of plumbing installations.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to estimate materials and labor cost of standard plumbing maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.
  • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
  • Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Ability to prepare standard reports.
  • Ability to read and write at the level appropriate to the position.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.
  • Possession of a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work from lifts, crawl spaces, tunnels, rooftops, and confined spaces.
  • Ability to safely operate plumbing equipment, power tools, and service vehicles.
  • Knowledge of cross-connection control and backflow prevention devices.
  • Working knowledge of computerized work order systems.
  • Ability to obtain required campus certifications.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear the appropriate PPE.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
  • Satisfactory completion of the background check process.

  • Experience in higher education, healthcare, laboratory, or institutional facilities.
  • Experience maintaining commercial plumbing systems.
  • Knowledge of domestic hot water recirculation systems.
  • Experience with booster pumps, sewage lift stations, grease interceptors, and water treatment equipment.
