About The Position

Nexus Children’s Hospitals – Houston Market is seeking a Plumber / Maintenance Technician to support Plant Operations across its facilities. This role is crucial for ensuring that the facilities, physical plant systems, and equipment remain safe, reliable, and properly maintained. The position focuses on plumbing systems, including troubleshooting, repairing, installing, and maintaining them, while also assisting with general facility maintenance, preventive maintenance, and repairs across various building systems. The ideal candidate will possess strong hands-on plumbing experience and the mechanical aptitude to handle diverse maintenance needs in a hospital setting.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional plumbing, commercial building maintenance, or related facilities experience required.
  • Strong plumbing background with demonstrated experience performing plumbing maintenance and repairs required.
  • Strong working knowledge of commercial plumbing systems, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Ability to diagnose plumbing problems and determine appropriate repairs.
  • Knowledge of water distribution, drainage, fixtures, valves, piping, and related plumbing components.
  • Working knowledge of general building maintenance principles and mechanical systems.
  • Experience using plumbing tools, hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and diagrams.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple service requests and respond appropriately to urgent facility needs.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of the Plant Operations team.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to complete electronic work orders and maintenance documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a plumbing trade or technical program preferred.
  • General working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, mechanical, construction, and other building systems preferred.
  • Experience in a hospital, healthcare, commercial, or other complex facility environment preferred.
  • General building maintenance experience involving multiple trades is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes, licensing standards, DNV requirements, ADA guidelines, and facility safety standards preferred.
  • Current Texas plumbing license strongly preferred.
  • Additional plumbing, backflow, medical gas, HVAC, electrical, or other applicable trade certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary resource for plumbing-related maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs throughout assigned hospital facilities.
  • Diagnose and repair plumbing issues involving water supply lines, drains, toilets, sinks, faucets, valves, pumps, water heaters, fixtures, and other related systems.
  • Install, repair, and replace plumbing fixtures, piping, valves, fittings, and related components as needed.
  • Inspect plumbing systems and equipment to identify leaks, deterioration, potential failures, and other maintenance concerns.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on plumbing systems and related equipment to reduce downtime and prevent unexpected failures.
  • Respond promptly to plumbing emergencies and service requests while minimizing disruption to patient care and hospital operations.
  • Assist with plumbing modifications associated with renovations, equipment installations, and facility improvement projects.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, diagrams, and equipment specifications.
  • Maintain appropriate plumbing parts, tools, and materials to support timely repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance journals, work orders, logs, inspections, and other required documentation.
  • Troubleshoot and repair a variety of hospital equipment, building systems, and physical plant components.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on facility equipment and systems.
  • Assist with general maintenance involving HVAC, electrical, mechanical systems, painting, carpentry, and other building trades based on experience and departmental needs.
  • Perform minor construction and repair work necessary to prepare hospital areas for furnishings, equipment, and operational needs.
  • Monitor equipment and building systems for proper operating status and condition.
  • Identify potential facility or equipment concerns and communicate recommendations to Plant Operations leadership.
  • Assist other members of the maintenance team with repairs, projects, inspections, and emergency needs.
  • Support a safe, clean, and properly maintained environment for patients, families, employees, and visitors.
  • Follow hospital safety procedures, infection prevention requirements, and applicable regulatory standards when performing maintenance activities.
  • Participate in ongoing training related to facility systems, equipment, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other maintenance and Plant Operations duties as assigned.
