About The Position

This opportunity resides with Warfare Systems (WS), a business group within HII’s Mission Technologies division. Warfare Systems comprises cyber and mission IT; electronic warfare; and C5ISR systems. HII works within our nation’s intelligence and cyber operations communities to defend our interests in cyberspace and anticipate emerging threats. Our capabilities in cybersecurity, network architecture, reverse engineering, software and hardware development uniquely enable us to support sensitive missions for the U.S. military and federal agency partners. HII Mission Technologies is searching for a Platform Systems Engineer to join our team in Springfield, VA. You will build, maintain, and optimize container platforms that supports modern, scalable, and resilient applications across the organization. In this role, you translate operational and application requirements into robust container platform architectures, ensuring reliability, security, and efficient automation throughout the ecosystem. This position bridges the gap between core infrastructure and application delivery, requiring a deep understanding of Linux systems, cloud-native networking, and DevSecOps principles to maintain high-performance, resilient, and secure hybrid-cloud platforms.

Requirements

  • 5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 0 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 9 years relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience responsible for the end-to-end engineering, implementation, and optimization of enterprise-grade container orchestration environments.
  • Over 5 years of hands-on experience with platforms such as Kubernetes, OpenShift, or Managed Cloud K8s (NKP/EKS/AKS/GKE).
  • Must demonstrate mastery in cluster lifecycle management, automated deployment via IaC (Terraform/Helm/Ansible), and the engineering of robust observability and security frameworks.
  • Must meet DoD8140 requirements or be willing to obtain a qualifying credential within 6 months.
  • TS/SCI clearance required with ability to obtain CI Poly

  • Cloud-native formal training or vendor certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified Azure Solutions Architect Associate, Google Professional Cloud Architect)
  • Kubernetes formal training or vendor certifications (e.g., Certified Kubernetes Administrator, Certified Kubernetes Developer)

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, and optimize container platforms that supports modern, scalable, and resilient applications across the organization.
  • Translate operational and application requirements into robust container platform architectures, ensuring reliability, security, and efficient automation throughout the ecosystem.
  • Work with development and infrastructure teams to design and implement Kubernetes clusters, manage core components, and develop automation for deployment, scaling, and lifecycle management.
  • Create and maintain CI/CD integrations.
  • Engineer containerized solutions.
  • Optimize cluster performance and resource utilization.
  • Support solution design efforts such as architecture documentation, configuration prototypes, and infrastructure‑as‑code patterns.
  • Conduct testing and troubleshoot platform issues.
  • Ensure that Kubernetes environments operate securely, consistently, and in alignment with organizational standards.
