About The Position

A Plant Utilities Engineer 1, on an assigned shift in a heating and/or air-conditioning plant, or in a single or multi-building facility, operates, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, tests, and calibrates mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air-conditioning and electrical distribution in the most efficient and safe manner possible. Incumbents also make recommendations on major overhauls and replacement of equipment and initiate activity relating to energy conservation projects. Duties of a Plant Utilities Engineer 1 may include the following but are not limited to: Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, test and calibrate mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical distribution in a safe and efficient manner. Make recommendations on major overhauls and replacement of equipment and identify , recommend, and develop energy conservation projects. May supervise subordinate staff in the operation and maintenance of heating facilities and mechanical equipment. May also supervise contractors in an emergency or project situation and may be required to assume responsibility for operation of the overall physical plant. Other duties as assigned. Requirements

  • Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force
  • Must have been an enlisted machinery technician (MK) OR possession of a certificate as a Marine Engineer issued by the U.S. Coast Guard
  • Must have been an enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army
  • Must have been an enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator reactor control, utilities man, machinist mate, or engine man with the U.S. Navy
  • Must have a merchant mariner's document (MMD) and have been a qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer or engine man with the U.S. Merchant Marine
  • Completion of a NYS Department of Labor apprenticeship program for stationary engineers or for plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC Mechanic or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC)
  • Completion of a high-pressure boiler operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License
  • An Associate's degree in HVAC, from an accredited college
  • A Bachelor's degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical or Marine Engineering
  • Four years or more of full-time hands-on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facility, computer applications of digital energy platforms and building analytics and/or performing diagnosis, repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment.
  • Four years or more of full-time hands-on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment.
  • Completion of a HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours) or completion of an approved certificate in HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler operations and maintenance, plumbing from an accredited technical school or technology college.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid NYS driver's license.
  • Experience in a hospital/healthcare setting.
