About The Position

This is an Expression of Interest for Casual Plant Superintendent positions located in the Beaufort Delta Region. The purpose of this Expression of Interest (EOI) is to solicit resumes from applicants who may be interested in casual work with the Northwest Territories Power Corporation, Energy North Operations. Casual employment is on an as-and-when basis and full time hours are not guaranteed. Under the general supervision and direction of the Manager Plant Operations in the Beaufort Delta, the Plant Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the power generation and transmission facilities to ensure the safe, efficient and reliable supply of electricity to the community. The Plant Superintendent will represent and support corporate programs and business initiatives; provide effective customer service within the community; participate as a member of the Energy North Operations in determining department objectives and priorities; and will undertake cross training in other program areas as determined by the work group.

Requirements

  • High School diploma (or equivalent) plus related mechanical or electrical experience or plant operator training; OR a minimum of Grade 10 education with at least three (3) years relevant mechanical or electrical experience. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • A full valid Class 5 NWT driver’s license is required.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Excellent knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with minimal direct supervision in a location that is remote from the regional office.
  • Good oral and written communication skills to maintain effective, open, and reliable communications with team members, customers, and community representatives.
  • Administrative, supervisory, and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and assignments, direct the work of staff, and to provide documentation, reports, and recommendations to the regional office.
  • Must be willing to travel for mandatory training.
  • Steel-toed boots are required.

Nice To Haves

  • A course in Power Engineering, Building Maintenance or one with an electrical/mechanical orientation would be an asset.
  • A related journeyperson certification would be an asset.
  • A valid First Aid and CPR certification would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Always work safely; adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health, Safety and Environment program; comply with all rules and regulations; continually practice health and safety while performing any duties.
  • Ensure the safety of other employees, contractors and the general public in the workplace by: reporting any failure to adhere to safety practices or rules, providing detailed orientations and identification of hazards to all visitors, removing hazards or make the workplace safe when leaving a work area.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of the Health, Safety and Environment program as well as NTPC’s safety culture.
  • Participate in team meetings in accordance with the principles of team management to determine generation program objectives; provide input to group financial and program planning; assess and coordinate unit workload and priorities.
  • Provide support to regional, head office or contract staff in the completion of area projects with regards to scheduling, monitoring and hands-on assistance.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with community and local business representatives; inform the Manager Plant Operations in the Beaufort Delta of local problems, issues, or initiatives that may concern the corporation; participate with regional and head office management and staff in meetings with community representatives; participate in corporate sponsored events.
  • Maintain buildings in a safe and clean manner including keeping entrances and exits clear of snow and debris; ensure combustible materials are stored in proper locations; test emergency lighting and exit signs and arrange servicing as needed; ensure tools and equipment are properly inventoried, maintained and stored; floors are swept and washed.
  • Ensure that the power plant, auxiliary buildings, tank farm and compound are secure and that the regional office is immediately notified of all hazardous, or potentially hazardous, conditions or environmental issues.
  • Provide training to and receive training from co-workers and perform other duties related to Energy North Operations as determined by the Manager Plant Operations in the Beaufort Delta.
  • Other duties as required.

Benefits

  • $42.96 per hour plus 10% vacation pay.
