About The Position

The Plant Propagator performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's (SDZWA) mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in wildlife care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature. The SDZWA maintains an extensive collection of rare and threatened plant life. The Plant Propagator independently performs a variety of moderately difficult tasks in the care and propagation of plants at the Zoo and/or the Safari Park nursery. This position reports to the Horticulture Supervisor, Manager or Director of Horticulture.

Requirements

  • Experience in greenhouse/nursery operations and propagation required.
  • College courses of study in botany, horticulture or related field required.
  • Experience with pests and diseases with a wide range of diverse plants required.
  • A.A. in horticulture, botany, plant science, or other related degree required.
  • Valid California Driver’s License Upon Hire required
  • Knowledge of science and technique for multiple methods of propagation
  • Knowledge of a wide range of plant material and its identification
  • Knowledge of operation of a plant nursery and greenhouse
  • Knowledge of botanical record keeping
  • Knowledge of methods of plant pest control, including the preparation and handling of pesticides
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and control
  • Knowledge of proper horticulture for plant maintenance
  • Ability to prepare, handle and use pesticides in a safe manner
  • Ability to use various tools and equipment needed in plant care and propagation
  • Ability to perform digital data management
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
  • Ability to manage effective watering schedule and application
  • Ability to work well with others in a diverse environment
  • Ability to competently perform the representative duties outlined
  • Ability to manage growing media and container sizes
  • Ability to repot carefully and successfully to support plant health

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in both California native and exotic plant propagation
  • Excellent database organization skills
  • B.S. in horticulture, botany, plant science, or other related degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Employ various propagation techniques such as seed sowing, cutting, grafting, division, and tissue culture to reproduce plants.
  • Carefully select and source seeds for propagation, considering factors like seed quality, viability, and suitability for the specific plant species.
  • Water plants at appropriate intervals, considering the specific water requirements of each plant species and the propagation stage.
  • Provide appropriate fertilization to ensure plants receive essential nutrients for healthy growth during the propagation phase.
  • Monitor and maintain optimal environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and light to promote successful propagation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve propagation-related challenges, such as poor germination rates, disease outbreaks, or environmental issues.
  • Prepare propagated plants for transplantation into larger containers or outdoor environments, ensuring they are acclimated to the new conditions.
  • Mix and prepare propagation media, including soilless mixes, compost, or other substrates suitable for the specific plants being propagated.
  • Assists with landscape area maintenance as required
  • Implement pest and disease management strategies, including the use of biological controls, pesticides, or integrated pest management techniques.
  • Continuously monitor the health of propagated plants, diagnosing and addressing any issues promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records of propagation activities, including dates, methods used, plant varieties, and any relevant observations for future reference.
  • Keep track of plant inventory, ensuring accurate labeling and organization of propagated plants.
  • Stay updated on the latest propagation techniques and research to improve efficiency and success rates.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain propagation tools and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations related to plant propagation, including the use of protective equipment and safe handling of chemicals and equipment.
