About The Position

The City of Durham’s Department of Water Management (DWM) is seeking a Plant Maintenance Mechanic to join their team. This position is responsible for the maintenance of water and wastewater treatment plants, dams, and lift stations. Employees will perform a broad range of paraprofessional work, from routine to specialized corrective and preventative maintenance. The role involves receiving work orders, stocking vehicles, performing mechanical maintenance and repairs on pumps, motors, gearboxes, and other equipment. Fabricating parts, repairing clarifiers, grit collectors, scum troughs, belt presses, and GBTs are also key responsibilities. The position requires testing and removing equipment for rebuilds, cleaning work areas, and utilizing welding, rigging, millwrighting, and various tools and machinery. Additionally, the role includes serving as an emergency standby responder on a rotating basis. The position may also involve ordering parts, communicating with technical representatives and OEM representatives, and performing office and operational support duties such as maintaining databases and records, and training lower-level staff.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED, HiSET, TASC)
• Two (2) years of related experience
• Valid, unrestricted, North Carolina driver's license or willingness to obtain one within 60 days of hire if currently holding another state's license.
• Additional on-the-job and/or safety-related certifications as required by the City.
• Must obtain AWWA Maintenance Technologist Class 1 Certification within two years of hire to maintain employment (for positions assigned to treatment plants).

Nice To Haves

• North Carolina Wastewater Collections I certification
• North Carolina Class A or B Commercial Driver’s
• AWWA Maintenance Technologist I certification
• One-year experience with a CMMS program.
• Experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or water utility setting.

Responsibilities

• Performs preventative and corrective mechanical maintenance.
• Uses specialized equipment, tools, and machinery to repair and rebuild pumps, motors, gearboxes, and other equipment and facility components.
• Fabricates parts.
• Inspects, tests, and cleans equipment, alarms, and related equipment to ensure proper working condition and compliance with applicable safety and operating regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Performs office and operational support duties, such as receiving work orders, stocking vehicles with necessary supplies and tools for work, maintaining databases and records, cleaning and/or washing down the work area, performing emergency or on-call duties, maintaining inventory, answering phones, and training lower-level staff.
• Serves as emergency standby responder on a rotating basis.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
