About The Position

This is an entry-level role within the Plant Engineering Technician I position, focused on building knowledge and skills. The role involves performing routine, well-defined, and easy-to-understand tasks that can typically be learned in a short period. Work is performed under close supervision using clearly prescribed methods and detailed instructions. The position is part of the Engineering Services team within Facilities Management Services (FMS), responsible for the operation and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and refrigeration equipment across the RIT campus.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in related field
  • No experience required
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered
  • Knowledge of web-based Building Management Systems
  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards, laws and regulations
  • Skill in using specialized tools and software for monitoring and maintaining plant systems
  • Skill in documenting maintenance activities and communicating effectively with engineers and management
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain large facilities equipment and systems including boilers, chillers, hot and chilled water systems, emergency power gensets, refrigeration systems, electrical breakers, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units, computer systems, and underground infrastructure systems
  • Ability to safely operate all equipment including, but not limited to; trucks, utility vehicles, hand tools, and power tools
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Performs physical and computer rounds of capital equipment on a daily basis, noting any deviations or operational concerns, making corrections, and reporting concerns to colleagues and/or supervision.
  • Responds to all types of service calls placed by students and faculty/staff including fire alarms, heating and cooling issues, refrigeration, plumbing, door problems, elevator problems, and electrical problems as dispatched by the Department and Public Safety.
  • Utilizes Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) drawings, design specifications, or manufacturers' recommendations to troubleshoot, adjust, and verify systems operation.
  • Performs water treatment testing on closed loops, cooling towers, and steam boilers. Makes any necessary adjustments to chemical feed equipment, calibrates sensors, maintains softeners, and adds chemicals to systems, as necessary.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment, and makes any necessary repairs.
  • Performs repairs on Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment: Including but is not limited to dismantling equipment and removing it.
  • Other duties as assigned.
