About The Position

The Town of Essex is seeking a Planning Technician to join their Community Development team. This is a full-time position with excellent benefits, created due to an internal promotion. The role serves as the initial point of contact for the Community Development office, managing the flow and tracking of development review and permitting processes. A key responsibility includes supporting the transition to digital record-keeping and permitting, as well as preparing minor development application reports for the Development Review Board.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree is preferred in a relevant discipline with some coursework in land use, architecture, historic preservation, or conservation plus some relevant experience in a related field or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

Responsibilities

Greets visitors and determines the nature of their requests.
Assists residents and property owners with completion of applications.
Assists in processing permit and zoning compliance applications.
Updates website content, calendars, agendas, and minutes.
Attends evening Development Review Board (DRB) meetings as necessary.
Provides staff support and attends the evening meetings of the Housing Commission (estimate 1 meeting per month).
