About The Position

The Planning Technician Coop Student is responsible for performing various activities associated with the support of planning activities, including conducting surveys, research, data analysis, and preparing documents. This role involves assisting with daily inquiries, reviewing land use proposals, updating databases, tracking applications, and developing mapping and illustrations. The student will also support record keeping and special projects within the Community Planning function.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in a College or University in the field of Urban & Regional Planning or related field of study
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with general land use planning principles
  • Knowledge of word processing, spread sheets, GIS, interpreting air photos and maps, and a familiarity with reading plans
  • An understanding of the core principles and considerations of urban design.
  • Knowledge of the planning and development processes in Ontario and the role of urban design.
  • Knowledge of computer software such as MS Office Suite.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to use SketchUp, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop
  • Hand-drawn skills would also be beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with responding to daily enquiries regarding planning and development matters.
  • Review land use proposals for basic conformance with land use policies.
  • Update the Municipalities database system for tracking applications.
  • Record and track status of all planning related matters.
  • Develop and prepares mapping and illustrations.
  • Assist with record keeping for the Community Planning function.
  • Assist with special projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
