About The Position

The City of Manhattan Beach is seeking an organized and highly self-motivated individual to work in the Community Development Department's Planning Division. The Planning Division is responsible for reviewing development proposals for compliance with adopted policies and regulations, and for conducting long-range planning programs. The intern will gain experience in various aspects of the division, including public counter and phone support, research, updating electronic forms, and assisting with building projects. This position is ideal for candidates interested in Urban Planning, Architecture, Public Administration, or related fields. Interns are expected to commit to at least 20 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months. The role involves providing short-term staff support to a City department, assisting with specific duties, and exposing students or recent graduates to career options in municipal government.

Requirements

  • Must be a recent graduate within the last 6 months or a current student in good standing at an accredited college or university with major course work in public administration or a related field.
  • No experience is necessary.
  • Must have general knowledge of research methods and techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively and communicate with other people both orally and in writing.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow directions and complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to learn and use personal computer hardware and software.
  • Willingness to commit to at least 20 hours per week for at least 6 months.

  • A strong desire to work in a public service oriented environment is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and develop professional and technical knowledge, skills, and practical work experience in the assigned department or function.
  • Assist in collecting data for department studies, functions, and/or projects.
  • Perform basic research, analyze data, and write reports and summaries.
  • Assist in budget preparation and maintenance.
  • Maintain appropriate records and files.
  • Interact with City employees, contractors, and the public in person or via telephone.
  • Assist in administrative and clerical support activities as needed.
