About The Position

This role involves setting up, operating, and maintaining a planer machine, ensuring product quality and machine efficiency. The position requires a strong understanding of safety procedures, machine maintenance, and the ability to perform both minor and major repairs with assistance from the maintenance department. The individual will be responsible for lumber flow, knife changes, and general upkeep of the work area. Additionally, the role includes performing millwright duties throughout the mill, requiring specific training and assessments.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform critical measurements using a caliper.
  • Ability to set, monitor, and maintain planer machine.
  • Ability to perform all minor repairs and all preventive maintenance.
  • Ability to plan for and take responsibility for major repairs using the maintenance department for assistance.
  • Ability to maintain proper setup and operation of the planer.
  • Ability to maintain a quality finish of the product.
  • Thorough familiarity with all preventive maintenance procedures, controls, and adjustment of the planer.
  • Must stand on feet all day.
  • Perform occasional heavy lifting.
  • Ability to work with hand tools.
  • Must furnish your own hand tools as per tool list.
  • Ability to work in outside conditions.
  • Score a 21 on the Mechanical Reasoning assessment.
  • Achieve Level 1 on the Millwright assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment, safety rules, and lockout procedures.
  • Perform critical measurements using a caliper.
  • Set, monitor, and maintain the planer machine.
  • Perform all minor repairs and all preventive maintenance on the planer.
  • Plan for and take responsibility for major repairs, utilizing the maintenance department for assistance.
  • Maintain proper setup and operation of the planer to ensure a quality finish of the product.
  • Be thoroughly familiar with all preventive maintenance procedures, controls, and adjustments of the planer.
  • Feed the Planer and ensure a constant lumber flow through the planer from the tilt hoist through the grader station.
  • Keep the machine set to proper tolerances.
  • Assist maintenance on major repairs of machines.
  • Perform minor repairs to the machine and perform all routine maintenance and lubrication.
  • Be responsible for changing knives.
  • Perform housekeeping as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Assist with maintenance repairs to other machines within the department as directed by the supervisor.
  • Take the West Fraser Qualified Millwright training.
  • Conduct duties of millwright work throughout the mill.
  • Complete competency checklist per level.
  • Score a 21 on the Mechanical Reasoning assessment.
  • Achieve Level 1 on the Millwright assessment.
