This role is generally responsible for performing all aspects of a complete design for complex mechanical engineering assignments. Work at this level requires extensive progressive experience in mechanical engineering and involves applying advanced engineering techniques and analysis. This work will be performed under general supervision. The position involves familiarity with department design and drafting standards, project scope, specifications, and design criteria. It also includes on-site assistance during startup, performing engineering activities such as stress analysis, construction specifications, material procurement specifications, calculations, and piping estimates. The role involves developing conceptual layouts and cost studies, producing estimate-level preliminary designs and material take-offs, and generating detail design calculations and sketches for materials of construction. Assisting the drafting group, consulting with design leaders from other disciplines, and reviewing vendor and other discipline drawings are key responsibilities. The engineer will produce designs with efficient use of construction materials, focusing on ease of construction and client satisfaction. Checking calculations made by other engineers, advising senior engineers on design or scope changes, and assisting in developing mechanical purchase inquiries are also part of the role. Developing construction specifications, reviewing fabrication drawings, performing fieldwork for data gathering and construction support, and providing technical guidance to less experienced personnel are expected. The role requires knowledge of discipline-specific methods, practices, and techniques for engineering, designing, and constructing process and manufacturing projects. Recognizing and communicating scope and design changes promptly, coordinating work activities with teammates and the discipline lead, applying advanced engineering techniques and analysis to complex designs, and estimating/scheduling professional service hours are crucial. The position requires a complete understanding of the skills and experience needed for engineering and design functions, the ability to identify and develop work-sharing packages for interoffice support, and leadership to ensure communication and execution within scope, schedule, and budget.
