This role is generally responsible for performing all aspects of complete designs for small and large mechanical engineering assignments, utilizing theoretical knowledge and practical design methods. The work will be performed under general supervision. Responsibilities include familiarity with and utilization of department design and drafting standards, understanding project scope, specifications, and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team, and providing on-site assistance during startup. The engineer will accomplish engineering activities such as stress analysis, construction specifications, material procurement specifications, calculations, and piping estimates. They will develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine the simplest, most efficient approach to solving engineering tasks, and produce estimate-level preliminary designs and material take-offs suitable for the estimate level. The role involves producing detailed design calculations and sketches for materials of construction, ensuring they are neatly prepared and organized for efficient checking and use by drafters/designers. The engineer will assist the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems, providing sufficient sketches and details for drawing completion. Collaboration with design leaders from other disciplines is essential for the smooth flow of information. Responsibilities also include reviewing and checking vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for mechanical input, producing designs with efficient use of construction materials, emphasizing ease of construction and client satisfaction. Checking calculations made by other engineers for accuracy and conformance to codes, specifications, and design criteria is crucial. The engineer will advise senior engineering on design or scope changes, assist in developing scopes, drawings, and specifications for procurement inquiries, and develop construction specifications. Reviewing fabrication drawings and other construction submittents for conformance is also required. Fieldwork for gathering data, checking tie-ins, and providing construction support will be performed. The role includes providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel and applying advanced engineering techniques to complex designs. Developing small work sharing packages for interoffice execution support is also part of the role.
