Under close supervision, this position applies a working knowledge of practices and established procedures in the maintenance, repair, and reconstruction of the drinking water and reclaimed water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Requirements

  • Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of City of Austin (COA) policies and procedures related to pipeline operations.
  • Knowledge of COA safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimalized numbers, fractions, and percentages.
  • Skill in using computers and related software.
  • Skill in reading maps, plans, drawings, and electrical equipment.
  • Skill in using hand tools and power tools.
  • Skill in operating a motor vehicle and motorized equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to act as a member of a confined space entry team and perform maintenance tasks in confined spaces, up to 100 feet deep with the use of an SRL Body Harness that supports weight as designated by work area.
  • Ability to use SCBA, respirator, and other confined space equipment as designated by work area.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to climb to heights of twenty (20) feet on ladders that supports weight as designated by work area.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, unassisted.
  • Ability to work in hazardous environments with exposure to hazardous chemicals, solvents, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to work various shifts, on-call, and/or call back hours.
  • Ability to meet and maintain driver eligibility standards detailed in the COA Driver Safety Program while driving personal and COA vehicles on official business.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year of experience in general construction maintenance, general underground utility construction maintenance, or plumbing activities.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver License.
  • Must obtain valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements within six (6) months of employment.
  • Positions in water distribution must obtain a Class D Water Operator License from TCEQ within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must obtain a Class C Water Distribution License from TCEQ before Class D expires.
  • Positions in wastewater collection must obtain a Class I Wastewater Collection License from TCEQ within six (6) months of employment.
  • For specified work groups, Respiratory Protection and Confined Space Entry training must be completed within six (6) months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience maintaining and repairing mechanical industrial equipment including hydraulic systems.
  • Previous pumping distribution or water treatment experience in a municipal water system.
  • Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for work order and asset management, basic computer navigation skills, and the ability to learn new software applications.
  • Training and/or experience in welding and the use of oxygen and acetylene torch (cutting, brazing, soldering, etc.).
  • Knowledge of safety practices in the workplace including confined space entry, ladder climbing, water and boat safety, and hazardous chemicals.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in investigation and inspection of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Performs labor-intensive work and assists in excavation, repair, and replacement of water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Assists in the basic operation, inspection, and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment, including heavy equipment requiring a CDL.
  • Operates, calibrates, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs a variety of electronics, power tools, and equipment.
  • Assists and performs the setup, operation, and maintenance of a variety of safety-related equipment according to utility safety procedures and SOPs.
  • Assists in reading and interpreting maps, plans, drawings, meters, gauges, and videos.
  • Responds to citizen questions, concerns, and complaints.
  • Assists and performs asset control and inventory activities.
  • Assists in the completion of paperwork, forms, and reports.
