About The Position

PCSI is seeking a Pipefitter to join its Mechanical department. This role involves installation, repairs, and maintenance of high-pressure steam, hydronic heat, chilled water, and plumbing systems across a military facility. The position reports to the Mechanical Supervisor and is based at the Detroit Arsenal in Warren, MI. This is a union shop position with a specific rate of pay and benefits. PCSI is a non-profit organization and federal contractor that aims to integrate veterans and other people with disabilities into meaningful jobs. This position is part of a 5-person plumbing/pipefitting shop executing a facility operations & maintenance (O&M) and repair contract for a military installation.

Requirements

  • Formal apprenticeship training or equivalent experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bona fide formal apprenticeship or 8 years of equivalent training and experience required.
  • Knowledge of high-pressure piping systems and equipment, such as steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators.
  • Skill in troubleshooting/inspecting piping systems to identify irregularities and existing and/or potential problems and system malfunctions.
  • Skill in using and maintaining hand and power tools such as pro press, mega press, wrenches, pipe threader, cutter, dividers, chalk lines, drills, grinders, and ground fault interrupter equipment.
  • Ability to install, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair industrial or domestic high-temperature water and high-pressure piping systems and equipment without normal supervision.
  • Able to effectively read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Successfully pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screen, background check, and motor vehicle report.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance, including a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) investigation.
  • Maintain a valid State of Michigan driver’s license and remain insurable to operate Company vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Installation, repairs, and maintenance of high-pressure steam, hydronic heat, chilled water, and plumbing systems.
  • Reviewing as-built drawings.
  • Fabricating and assembling pipe.
  • Troubleshooting system issues.
  • Testing systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Following established safety standards.
  • Laying out work and measuring to locate the position of pipe from drawings or other written specifications.
  • Cutting various sizes of pipe to correct lengths, using oxyacetylene torch or pipe cutting machines, and threading pipe with stocks and dies.
  • Assembling pipe with couplings and fastening pipe to hangers.
  • Making standard shop computations relating to pressures, flow, and size of pipe required.
  • Making standard tests to determine whether the finished pipe meets specifications.
  • Repair of steam systems up to 125lbs, including control valves, expansion joints, condensate pumps, steam traps, etc.
  • Repair and function of hydronic heating systems, including valves, pumps, and heat exchangers.
  • Repair of chilled water systems.
  • Install, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, and test steam compressed air, water, natural gas, hydraulic fluids, and maintain plumbing and heating equipment and facilities related to shop equipment.
  • Install, modify, and repair new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment, such as steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic systems, steam generators, boilers, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators.
  • Plan and lay out the installation, repair, and modification of high-pressure piping systems and equipment, applying and interpreting information from blueprints, charts, and sketches.
  • Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Being on call for after-hours emergency calls on a scheduled rotating basis.
  • All other duties as assigned.
