The Construction & Maintenance Department is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the Company’s natural gas distribution system. We are looking for a Pipe Layer VI to join our team! Important Note: This role is considered safety sensitive, and as such, you may be required to undergo various background screenings. This may include but is not limited to a driving record abstract, criminal check, a company sponsored medical and drug testing. This position reports to our Apex Operations Center located in Apex, North Carolina.

Requirements

  • Pipe Layer VI (at least 12 months experience)
  • Completed high school or equivalent (i.e. GED)
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving history.
  • Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (strongly preferred) OR able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety and environmental policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled with common hand and power tools (i.e. shovel, screwdriver, pipe wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, etc.).
  • Ability to don and be annually fit tested for self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment.
  • Ability to adhere to safe working and defensive driving procedures.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for positive customer and contractor interactions.
  • Ability to work as a team member within a diverse team.
  • Possess basic computer and internet navigation skills.
  • Available for overtime, as needed.
  • Available for natural gas emergency response during the workday, as well as in the evenings and some weekends, when on-call.
  • Willing and able to meet a 45-minute emergency response time from the geographical center of the Apex area.

  • Good mechanical aptitude.
  • Flagger experience and/or certification.

Responsibilities

  • Install natural gas pipe in ditches
  • Manually dig around various utilities
  • Pressure test steel and plastic natural gas lines
  • Participate in the repair of third-party damage to natural gas lines and various types of gas leaks
  • Perform location of natural gas lines and facilities
  • Complete pipe maintenance activities
  • Install test charts
  • Set up common Department of Transportation approved work sites
  • Effectively flag traffic
  • Safely drive a company vehicle
  • Operator Qualification testing involves both written and hands-on components to ensure those who perform covered, safety-sensitive tasks on the natural gas system are trained, knowledgeable, and qualified.
