About The Position

This position is responsible for planning pipe system installation or repair according to specifications, inspecting and testing installed systems, selecting appropriate pipe sizes and materials, and assembling and securing pipes and related equipment using various joint methods. The role also involves reading and interpreting blueprints, making sketches or corrections on drawings, and potentially turning valves to shut off fluids. The Pipe Fitter 1st Class will cut, thread, and install pipe, and remove and replace worn components.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, one year certificate from college or technical school preferred.
  • Industrial and/or marine pipe fitting experience: 1st Class: 3-5 years
  • Pass the Gulf Copper written pipe fitter and/or hands-on pipe fitter test when applicable.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and schedule pressures.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Perform basic mathematical functions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Commitment to company values, policies and procedures and safety program.

Responsibilities

  • Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair according to specifications.
  • Inspect, examine, and test installed systems and pipelines, using pressure gauges, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods.
  • Select pipe sizes and types and related materials, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.
  • Measure and mark pipes for cutting and threading.
  • Attach pipes to walls, structures, and fixtures such as radiators, exchangers, or tanks, using brackets, clamps, tools, or welding equipment.
  • Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, fittings, and related equipment, according to specifications, by using welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, and threading joint methods.
  • Layout or review full scale drawings of pipe systems, supports, and related equipment, following blueprints. Ability to provide sketches or corrections on drawings as needed.
  • Turn valves to shut off steam, water, or other gases or liquids from pipe sections, using valve keys or wrenches. (Marine divisions only)
  • Cut, thread, and install pipe to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, and pipe threaders and benders.
  • Remove and replace worn components.
