Pipe Combo Welder

Zachry Group•Gregory, TX

About The Position

The Pipe Combo Welder performs high-quality GTAW and SMAW welding on piping and structural components in live field environments. The position requires technical skill and adaptability to maintain code-quality welds while working in confined spaces, elevated locations, changing weather, and schedule-critical conditions. The welder may also assist with pipe installation, preparation, fabrication, fit-up, and field installation planning when not actively welding. The role follows site safety and permit requirements, applicable welding procedures and quality expectations, and project documentation practices. Welds must meet applicable visual and nondestructive examination acceptance criteria. The job involves extensive standing, walking, bending, squatting, sitting, lifting, use of hands and arms, work at heights, and working outdoors in all weather conditions while wearing required PPE.

Requirements

  • Pass company-required weld qualification tests under QUAL-SOP-14.5.3.
  • Have 4–7+ years of field welding experience in industrial environments.
  • Have a strong understanding of WPS requirements, filler materials, interpass-temperature control, and heat-affected zones.
  • Interpret isometric drawings, weld symbols, and field modifications.
  • Have experience welding multiple types of pipe, including carbon steel, stainless steel, chrome, and other alloys.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • Be able to work at heights as required.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail, a strong safety mindset, and mechanical aptitude.
  • Follow written procedures, including WPSs and ITPs.
  • Meet required physical demands, including standing, walking, bending, squatting, sitting, lifting, and using arms and hands to handle objects, materials, controls, and tools.
  • Be able to pick up, lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Be able to climb ladders and stairways and occasionally work from platforms or scaffolding using appropriate fall protection.
  • Be able to work in all weather conditions, including heat, rain, cold, and wind, while wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Wear required PPE, including a hard hat, safety glasses or spoggles, earplugs, masks or respirators, a high-visibility safety vest, leather gloves, and leather steel-toed work boots.
  • Pass the required weld tests: ZII-001 (2.75-inch/0.625-inch) GTAW (ER70S-2) / SMAW (E7018) in the restricted 6GR position, and ZII-002 (2.75-inch/0.625-inch) GTAW (ER70S-2) in the restricted 6GR position.
  • Pass visual testing for every welder qualification test under ASME Section IX QW-302.4 and meet ASME Section IX QW-194 requirements and the stated acceptance criteria: no linear indications, visible porosity, incomplete fusion, tungsten craters, arc strikes, arc blow or arc marks, slag, or incomplete penetration; root concavity limited to 1/32 inch (0.8 mm), except zero root concavity for EX010 electrodes; external reinforcement no greater than 1/8 inch; complete fusion of weld and base metal; and undercut no greater than 1/32 inch (0.8 mm). Blending with a file or post-weld grinding is not allowed; wire brushing only.
