About The Position

A young, budding 12-year-old girl singer in Howard Beach is looking for a piano teacher to build her foundations in piano and music theory, with lessons connected to her singing dreams. She loves jazz and dreams of eventually writing her own songs, so the right teacher will be as much a creative collaborator as an instructor. The lessons will take place in the student's home in Howard Beach, NY, once a week. Each session will consist of a 45-minute lesson for the 12-year-old girl, followed by a shorter 15-minute lesson for her 8-year-old brother. The ideal candidate is local to keep the commute manageable, especially on bad-weather days, and can start as soon as possible.

Requirements

Excellent pianist with a genuine love of music.
Strong knowledge of jazz and Broadway repertoire.
Experience or comfort teaching young students, especially with a focus on building confidence.
Encouraging, enthusiastic teaching style, giving praise where it's due.
Upbeat, funny-yet-serious personality.
Ability to hold a 12-year-old's attention and make theory and technique feel creative rather than tedious.
Lives locally.
Available to start ASAP.

Responsibilities

Teach piano basics, music theory, and sight-reading in a fun, creative, and engaging way.
Connect lessons to her singing interests by teaching accompaniments to pop, jazz, and Broadway songs.
Introduce basic chord progressions and songwriting concepts so she can eventually write her own music.
Instill enthusiasm for new songs and genres (jazz, Broadway, pop) to help her grow her repertoire.
Play pieces for the students (e.g., Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart) to inspire and model excellent musicianship.
Teach a short, age-appropriate lesson to her 8-year-old brother following her session.
