About The Position

The Physiotherapy Assistant (PTA) is an active member of the health care team who works with individuals, families and groups to educate, promote health, and increase or maintain function and activity throughout all stages of health and complexities of illness. As part of an inter-professional team, the PTA works effectively to provide optimal physiotherapy care and to assist the patient in achieving their physiotherapy goals. The PTA motivates and encourages the patient to meet their expected outcomes by contributing to the valuation, implementation and ongoing modification of the patient's physiotherapy program and by participating in the provision of holistic and comprehensive physiotherapy care. PTAs can complete standardized outcome measures as part of the physiotherapist's assessment and implement assigned physiotherapy treatment plans, in alignment with national and provincial physiotherapy standards. The PTA is responsible to communicate frequently with the physiotherapist and to obtain the relevant information to provide safe accountable care. The PTA incorporates critical thinking, effective communication, and formal education to deliver high quality of care to patients.

Requirements

  • Completed an accredited Rehabilitation Assistant Program or Physiotherapy Assistant Program (or diploma)
  • BCLS
  • Ability to communicate well with patients, their families and health care team members
  • Must be cooperative and possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work with physiotherapy and health care team members
  • Organizational ability to complete assigned work and manage changing staffing and caseload levels
  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics, anatomy, basic computer skills and training in electro-physical agents and other physiotherapy specific interventions
  • Knowledge of common diseases and disabilities as well as the treatments, precautions and contraindications for them

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in geriatrics is considered an asset
  • Familiarity with dementia care also considered an asset
  • Previous experience working with physically and/or cognitively impaired people is an asset
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Responsibilities
